I recently had a Trojan on my PC which I thought I’d disposed off with another Antivirus programme but my new Avast 5.0 is still not able to get past the “Unsecured” stage.
I find this a bit dissapointing as in the past with Avast 4.8 I got immediate advice from Avast of the existance of a problem and how to cure it.
Hope this message doesn’t spread the problem but I have used Avast for years and have previously found it excellent.
Unable to Fix Now. Nothing happens.
What next please?
Thanks:Ian Mc
We need some information to go on as there is nothing to explain what you have done.
e.g. how did you get to version 5.0, install over the top of 4.8 or clean install ?
What is insecure there are several areas which might give an overall Unsecured notice, see image, this is an expanded view, click the Show Details to the right of that category.
Hi David
Neat avatar !!!
After the Trojan struck my Avast 4.8 advised that outward mail was unprotected, so I thought if I replace it that might solve the problem. I am very much feeling my way in the dark here !!!
So I deleted 4.8 and then replaced it with 4.7 from a PC magazine DVD.
No luck here as now all mail unprotected.
Then I discovered the new 5.0 and thought Aha all will be well!!!
Downloaded 5.0 and this started by automatically deleting 4.7 as a first step.
Looked like all OK till I went into “Summary” in 5.0 and got these messages
“UNSECURED Your system is not protected Please use the FIX NOW button to start protecting the system”
Also Avast prog has been stopped Restart prog’m.
Tried Fix Now and Start progm.Nothing happens.
Also tried to enable shields but all unreachable.
What next please?
I fear that your prior infection may well have something to do with the problem.
If it is still active, uninstalling what elements of 4.8 leaves you unprotected and the next installation may well be attacked before it has a chance to get installed.
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. Though I somehow doubt this will be effective if malware is present and disabling security applications.
If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it and report the findings (it should product a log file).

- MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, On-Demand only in free version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later. - 2. SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.
Don’t worry about reported tracking cookies they are a minor issue and not one of security, allow SAS to deal with them though. - See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie.
Also try this tool - GMER Anti-Rootkit

You are an officer and a gentleman and well deserving of a pint of Tartan Special, Draught Guiness or Old Peculiar whatever is your tipple.
You hit it on the head first time with the first suggestion to repair thro the add/remove programme. First time I’ve used it except to delete programmes.
Anyway all is well “System is Fully Protected”
I already had Malwarebytes and Super Antispyware.
Cheers for that.
Thanks so much.
As we used to say in Bonnie Scotland “Slainte” pronounced Slangey Var.
Have a great weekend: Ian Mc
No problem, glad I could help.
The Draught Guinness sounds good, haven’t had one of those for a while ;D
