Unsecured?

Hi, this is my first post, I hope this is in the right section, if not please redirect me.

Avast stopped working today. When I open up the interface I get a message saying the “Avast anti-virus program has been stopped or is in an inconsistent state, please restart the program…” Neither the “Start program” button or the “Fix now” button (above) does anything. I haven’t had any trouble up until now so I’m rather perplexed.
Stuff:
I am running Avast! free antivirus version 5.0.462
I am running win2k Professional edition
Is there anything else you need to know to help?

Thanks,
Snork

Go to add/remove programs in Win Control Panel, chose avast change/uninstall and then choose “repair”.
Let it repair, then reboot.

I just tried your advice, no luck so far. I’m still getting the “unsecured” message.

What did you do before Avast stopped working? Any downloads? Softwareinstallation?
It ran okay prior?

Hmmm, nothing terrible unusual. Hardly any internet browsing (A couple of news sites). No new downloads. I did play one browser based game (flash I think?) that I’ve never played before called “Kung Fu Panda World” (at http://kungfupandaworld.com/) Umm, but I don’t think it was malicious, maybe I’m wrong?

Okay, Flash is always very, very dangerous, so let’s just give it a shot:
Download Malwarebytes Antimalware here: http://tex62.de/page7.php
Run it.

If something is found: reinstall avast.

Hi, I downloaded Malwarebytes from the site you gave and ran it (quick scan, I’ll try a thorough scan later) and it didn’t find anything. Do you think that it would be worth uninstalling and reinstalling avast anyway? I was doing a forum search this morning and I came across a lot of other posts describing my problem. One person recomended:

"Download the uninstall utility`s http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

run the V5 remover and reboot
run the 4.8 remover and reboot
run " Eusing Free Registry Cleaner " fix all and reboot http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm
Install V5 again …reboot…and pray… Grin"

I just saved that to a text notepad, so I don’t have the exact address of the thread… But it’s on this forum somewhere… (edit: this was from http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57238.0 ) At any rate, I think I will try this. I will post my results when I am done.

Ok, everyone following this thread, problem SOLVED (don’t you just love to hear that for a change?)

I actually never tried uninstalling the program. I found another suggestion (I’ll find the thread and post it in a bit) that said to go to add/remove programs, select avast, go to change/remove and then select UPDATE. I did this and it worked! Thanks Zyndstoff for taking the time to add your suggestions though!

(Edit: Here is where I found the solution http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55995.15)

By the way, does anyone have any idea what caused the problem was in the first place?

Thx for the feedback… highly appreciated!

Glad to hear it is solved now. As for the reasons… no. I don’t think anybody knows.

Just an interesting note, The same problem happened again today. I fixed it in the same fashion. I wonder if it is going to persist? ???

Good it worked but as a warning, using registry cleaners is unsafe.

I think it’s not the cleaner he means, but the “update”-installation…

This one:

run " Eusing Free Registry Cleaner " fix all and reboot http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm

Just a word of caution when using registry cleaners.

Yes, I never did use the registry cleaner (although I had been thinking of doing so.) thanks for the warning though.
