UNSOLVED! -- .1335 causes "subsystem to start" error

Hah! That’ll teach me. After a reboot (for unrelated activity) avast! Home Free 4.8.1335 is again showing only 2 providers running (Standard Shield / Internet Mail Shield) and the Web Shield paused for “a subsystem to start.”

I give up, unless somebody has a solution.

I have the setup log, but it’s huge (160kb) so should I post it here or mail it to??? If you have only specific sections you need, I can edit… RSVP JLJ

SOLVED, sorta – after uninstalling avast! and scrubbing zillions of registry traces, I reinstalled 4.8.1335 with Outlook/Exchange component included – even though I do not have Outlook installed (and did not install this component in earlier versions). After reboot I terminated this component and now AFAICT this version is working correctly.

Running XP Home SP3 fully updated ~

Per my thread on update scheduling I took the plunge and updated from avast! Home Free 4.8.1229 to 4.8.1335, and as happened the last time I tried anything later than .1229, I’m getting a “provider is waiting for a subsystem to start” message re Web Shield, which no longer runs. I’ve tried soft and hard reboots and repair, no fix. Last time this happened I uninstalled, wiped my registry and reinstalled avast! clean, with the identical problem resulting, so I am hesitant to do it again because it’s a huge PITA.

Internet Mail Shield is running and appears to work correctly; ditto Standard Shield. But Web Shield fails. Any ideas? I have several XP services disabled but I do not think they are problematic, they did not affect .1229. The only other security app running is WinPatrol Free but that, too, did not affect earlier versions of avast!

Frustrating!

We need the avast log (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log) to understand what is happening…
Any other filter (like K9) is installed?
