Unsure of what to make of this scan result...

I just did a thorough scan (with archive files being scanned as well) and I got a few results of which I’m unsure of what they are.

C:\Documents and Settings\Dan\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\KD0PK1YN\yahoo[1]\yahoo[1]

Result: Unable to scan: GZIP archive is corrupted.

C:\System Volume Information_restore{129201FA-B0AC-49B3-96B2-DEB8B91E727B}\RP521\A0037981.exe\Wise0010.bin

Result: Unable to scan: Installer archive is corrupted.

C:\System Volume Information_restore{129201FA-B0AC-49B3-96B2-DEB8B91E727B}\RP521\A0038004.exe\Wise0010.bin

Result: Unable to scan: Installer archive is corrupted.

C:\System Volume Information_restore{129201FA-B0AC-49B3-96B2-DEB8B91E727B}\RP522\A0038263.exe\Wise0013.bin

Result: Unable to scan: Installer archive is corrupted.

C:\System Volume Information_restore{129201FA-B0AC-49B3-96B2-DEB8B91E727B}\RP522\A0038264.exe\Wise0013.bin
Result: Unable to scan: Installer archive is corrupted.

Does anybody have an idea of what this stuff is and if it’s dangerous? And if it is dangerous, what would be the best plan of action? Thanks!

Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

Item 1 is in the Temp Internet Files folder and you could reasonably empty the temp internet files from your browser settings or use ClearProg - Temp File Cleaner or CCleaner - Temp File Cleaner, etc..

The others are in the C:\System Volume Information folder a part of the system restore function and are usually related to items you have at some point deleted (usually from a system folder) and system restore make a restore point for it in case you wish to reverse it.

If the archive really is corrupt the _restore points value is nullified so you could clear out your C:\System Volume Information folder and shave some valuable disk space if your system is running fine you can create a clean restore point and clear the rest.

Create a clean System Restore point:

  1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System tools, System Restore.
  2. In the pop-up that appears fill in the radio button to Create a Restore Point
  3. Click NEXT
  4. Enter a useful name that you will remember if you need to find this again (Clean Restore Point)
  5. Click CREATE

You now have a clean restore point, you should clear the old ones:

  1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System tools, Disk Clean Up
  2. Click OK on the C: drive
  3. Click the More Options tab
  4. In the System Restore section click the Clean Up button

installer corrupted / archive corrupted means, that we were not able to unpack the files and look what’s under the primary layer = the file is scanned from outside only… the reasons could be 1) the archive is really corrupted someway (or) 2) it’s an unsupported version of installer… anyway, there’s no reason for panic…

Thank you very much for the great advice! I didn’t think it was much of anything, but I just wanted to be on the side of caution. Again, many thanks.

No problem, glad we could help.
