Unusual daily virus definitions updates

Hi,

For the last few days I’ve been receiving daily virus definitions updates, something that never happened before.

Right now when I look up on the About display I get these numbers:

26.3.10886g (build 26.3.10886.0)
26.3.10749.0
260403-10
15,357,247
1.0.858

So the number 260403-10 is for definitions updates which are dated from yesterday and a new -10 number added to it today.

Using Win 11, 64 bit

What’s going on? Is it really happening so that we are getting daily updates?

You don’t always get a daily update, in that case you get micro vps streaming updates every few minutes until the next VPS update.
See image extract from my installation.

Thanks.

But I don’t have that _stream folder, probably because I disabled streaming updates. And yet just few minutes ago another installation of definitions took place (the first one was this morning several hours ago). My settings for updates are like this:

So I’m still not sure what’s going on…

20240403-2 … -6 …-10 are all regular updates (VPS) and not micro-updates.
Some days there are very few VPS updates, others much more. That said, not all of these daily VPS updates are always applied; they are applied either when the computer starts up or after a time defined in the secret geek area menu (360 minutes by default)…regardless of whether micro updates are enabled or not

Also, I’ve never understood the difference in settings, as shown in your screenshot, between:

  • Remind me when an update is available
    and
  • I’ll update them manually

In my experience, the first option (your configuration) also applies the update automatically without notifying you that an update is available(even though it should ).

There isn’t a huge difference in reality, you would still have to Update them Manually. The only difference being you would get a Reminder when one is available, you would still have to update them manually.

Actually, what I meant to say is that I’m not entirely sure about that; I remember setting it to ‘Remind me when an update is available’ and still receiving updates as if it were set to automatic, without getting any notifications… Which seems to be the case for @keram and his settings.

I’ll give it another go with the “remind me…” option and see how it works in practice.

If I confirm what @keram said, it might be a (long-standing) bug.

ps:I’ve left the micro-updates enabled; if the VPSs no longer update automatically, I should see a whole load of micro-updates.

I just got another update, 4th today, the number is 260404**-4**

Something is weird, it was never happening before.

With my settings as on the screenshot I’m getting a reminder about available updates but I have to run the update manually.

I don’t have that Avast geek setting in Free version.

FYI, the geek area is also available in the free version

But as it’s secret, it’s harder to find it
So:

oups:it’s not “360” minutes by default as i said but “240”

something strange going on.

I have always had both set to auto update which the definitions always does until today. The UI on the other hand just sits there until i look and its in red. no popup to say its waiting to be updated.

Like @keram picture above mine is showing that latest version number 260404-2 but its in red saying there is an update available. ive started the manual update and its just scrolling back and fourth for past 20 minutes and not completing.

now going to try a restart to see if that kicks it into action.

edit

a restart sorted it and its now showing 260404-4

Another update now: 260405-0

Same. im guessing with the multiple cyber attacks around the world at least they are keeping us upto date.

Initial feedback:

Since the configuration change, I haven’t received any updates – neither VPS updates nor streaming updates

It’s still odd that @keram receiving VPS updates without wanting to, whilst I’m not receiving streaming updates even though I want to.

I’d say my situation is more like @TheOwner, in that I’m no longer receiving micro-updates either.

I still get the impression that this update (26.3) did more than just fix the bug mentioned in the release notes.

I haven’t changed my settings, either in the User Interface or the Geek area.

I have always had the VPS updates set to Auto Update, can’t see the point in delaying them, given that there can be a couple of days between the actual VPS updates. I have always had the Streaming Updates enabled and auto update, given the very small size (1-3kb) of these incremental streaming updates.

That said 26.3 has had more issues than this, for me the removal of the Limited Mode in Notifications is going to result in more notifications.

And we still don’t have the Official Release notes posted in the forum.
