unwanted switch to "work offline"

When on line, I get put into the work offline mode for no reason. This happens inconsistently. But when it happens, it keeps on happening. Then it stops for a while. In trying to figure out what is causing this *"&%< problem, I found online a person complaining of something similar in 2007. They were told it may be malware or a virus or worm. That’s why I decided to post the problem here.

I run XP SP3 and use IE8. I have not had anything show up in Avast or Malaware.

Any suggestions?

Try scanning with

MBAM http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
update and run quick scan, click on “remove selected” to quarantine anything found, and restart
