Update another Avast 7 installation from the first one?

We are located in Thailand with a limited dialup connection. We have two notebooks, but only one aircard. Since one machine is almost constantly in use, the only way to update the other one is to download a manual definitions update.

Besides Avast 7, we also have Malwarebytes. We can update the other notebook’s Malwarebytes installation by copying two files, namely “rules.ref” and “database.conf” from one machine to the other. Can something similar be done to update the other notebook’s Avast 7 installation?

Shortly, no.

The definitions are here on “defs” folder of avast! installation.
You will need to disable self-defense module to manage that files. Maybe on Safe Mode.
But, in my opinion, you will mess avast! installation and the final result will be worse than the actual one.

Pity.

But I looked at the “defs” folder you mentioned and see something in the subfolder, the name of which looks like the date which might cause a problem with the installation. It concerns two files namely “sf.bin” and “sf1.bin”. Both of these are set to open with VLC media player presumably because I didn’t remove the association when I installed VLC. Is this likely to cause a problem?

Why do you think these files are causing any trouble?

They’re not causing a problem at the moment, or at least, not one that I’m aware of. But I’m assuming that an Avast .bin file would not normally be associated with VLC media player. By ‘association’, I mean the program they are configured to open with by default. I don’t know what function both of those perform and therefore I was unsure if having them associated with VLC could possibly cause a problem at some time in the future. That was what I was asking.

You can see tbem both in the image. Incidentally, the reason you see the year as ‘2555’ is because Thailand uses the Buddhist calender which is 543 years ahead of the Western calendar.
