I got a message that Avast Browser can’t update and needs to be reinstalled. If I do that will I lose all my settings, favourites, etc.?

I don’t use the Avast Secure Browser - but I would recommend that you save your settings before reinstalling.

How to Backup your Avast Secure Browser settings:

Make a note of where you saved the settings so you can restore them.

I had the same message this morning. Seems legit but has anyone else had this? Never been asked to reinstall before.

So having reinstalled it keeps coming up with the same message about not being able to update and asking to reinstall. Now I am worried!

I am very sorry to read that you’re experiencing an issue with the Avast Browser. Could you please provide more details like:

  1. Do you have an AV installed? If yes, did it update recently?
  2. Did you update your Windows OS recently?

I’ve been checking the server side and it looks OK.

Same here,I tried reinstalling ASB 4 times and still get cannot update

The update link in the browser didn’t work but when I went to your web site and downloaded/installed the browser it did update.

I get the same prompt and can’t update. I tried to reinstall and the setup file always gets stuck near the end and can’t install. So I’ve settled with just using it without it updating. Unfortunately I can’t find a way to turn off the auto-update.

bdot: Mine got stuck too but after I rebooted it had fully updated the browser and I no longer get the update prompt.

Hi all,

could you please let me know whether you’re facing this issue with the Antivirus protection being enabled? If yes, can you retry but with temporarily disabling the antivirus protection? I have a suspicion this may be caused by a recent antivirus update.

  1. restart the Browser
  2. go to the Settings menu, then About page
  3. Browser will start checking for an update & will download and install it
  4. Restart the browser
