Update Error: Cannot Connect to Server

I’m running Avast 7.0.1426 on a Dell Inpsiron 1150 running Windows XP Home.

The last few times that I’ve tried to update the Avast! virus database, I’ve gotten this error:

Error: cannot connect to server

In my Ashampoo firewall I have Avast! set to “Full Access Rights”

Can you help me get the updater working again?

try avast repair and reboot …

also consider installing latest version

I would also suggest that you delete the entry for avast.setup in the Ashampoo firewall (this and try a manual virus definitions update should force the Ashampoo firewall to ask permission again).

You should certainly update to the latest version of avast, but if the avast.setup were being blocked by the Ashampoo firewall then that too would fail as avast.setup is used for that too.

I’m still trying to resolve this problem, so I’ve been without antivirus protection for months and months.

Should I start a new topic, or can we pick up here where we left off in this old thread?

I’ve tried all the suggestions posted in this thread and would be grateful for some help in trying to determine the source of this problem.

so you have installed latest avast version?

do you have any other security programs installed?

does it work if you uninstall the firewall?

i suggest you attach a OTL diagnotic log, then maybe we can spot the problem?

scroll down to OTL here and follow the instructions http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

I’m running version 7.0.1474. What is the version number of the latest versin?

do you have any other security programs installed?

Yes; I have Ashampoo Firewall version 1.20 and SuperAntiSpyware version 5.5.1016 installed and running.

does it work if you uninstall the firewall?

Uninstall the firewall?! Wouldn’t that leave my computer vulnerable to all sorts of malware?

Thanks, Pondus.

I’ve downloaded OTL and am reading the instructions on that page you linked to.

It’s not clear to me if I’m supposed to continue on to downloading and running aswMBR.exe after I save the logs in ANSI format.

P.S. I’ve attached the two text files that OTL produced

P.P.S. Is there a way I can change the time zone on my account so the time stamps on my posts show me the local Seattle time?

I first tried disabling the Ashampoo firewall. But I continued receiving the “Cannot connect to server” error.

Then a friend suggested that just disabling the firewall was not sufficient, that I needed to completely uninstall it. He assured me that my router would serve as a firewall so that I don’t need a software firewall.

So I tried uninstalling the firewall, as per your suggestion, and now the updating works again!

Many thanks for that suggestion!
