Update Error

I got this error and did not have any connection problems:
Information about current update:
Last encountered error: The package is broken.

Total time: 1:13

  • Vps: Updated
(previous version: 0611-1, updated version: 0611-2)

Server: download33.avast.com (70.87.113.100)
Downloaded files: 5 (24.62 KB)
Download time: 8 s

Any problems with the current download as the error encountered was: “package is broken”.

Thanks

I’ve just downloaded (auto update) the latest VPS 0611-2 when I came on-line about 30 minutes ago without problems.

What does the about avast say is your VPS version, if the same probably nothing to worry about but I would suggest you try an avast repair.

Seems just a communication problem, traffic, etc.
Maybe just trying to manually update again…
Or just boot…

My version did not change it is still 0611-1 so apparently the update did FAIL.

I have rebooted and would prefer that Avast was able to deal with this without my intervention considering the fact that I can see no reason that the Avast Auto Update should not work since as I’ve said I’ve made no changes and Avast has not had problems to date.

I would expect that Avast will eventually update sucessfully. I remember Tech wrote (in part) the following in a previous thread:

avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds. If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.

I have never had any significant problems with Avast to date and have not made any changes of any kind to my computer. Thus on this basis it would seem to me that Avast SHOULD notice that my version is not UP TO DATE and eventually TRY AGAIN.

However with that said it does appear that Avast should have updated by now since Avast should be checking every 40 seconds as Tech points out. I could manually update as Tech suggests but if there is a problem with my AUTO UPDATE, which appears to be the case since I DO NOT have the CURRENT VPS version and AUTO UPDATE is not updating then maybe an issue with AUTO UPDATE remains.

I’ve read alot about suggestions to “try an avast repair” just as DavidR has suggested. What does this do and how do I do it?

Thanks for the help

In an ideal world we wouldn’t have to do anything the program would take care of it, but if what caused the problem is outside its control then perhaps that won’t happen.

A repair takes seconds is painless and if it resolves the problem you get the VPS update if not you will may have the same problem at the next update, in the meantime yo could be vulnerable to those viruses added to the VPS. So there are times when user interventions is best.

From the add remove programs, select avast! Antivirus, click Change/Remove from the next window scroll down and select Repair and click Next, you need to be on-line for this. Once you have done this I would suggest you do a manual update to confirm you can update rather than wait.

And why not… maybe it’s not avast fault… could be your connection, your Windows installation, etc. etc.
Calm down, check the logs and Windows Events at antivirus section to give us more info about the error.
The next update will be ok. Don’t worry.

Most probably this is exactly what is happening. No fear.

This is what proves you can update. The auto update feature just use the same procedure, the same but it is scheduled.

Can you check your system date and time, please?

Or just run:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe “C:<your avast installation path here>\Setup\setiface.dll”,RunSetup

After running a Manual Update:
Information about current update:
Total time: 1:13

  • Vps: Already up to date
    (current version 0611-2)

Server: download11.avast.com (67.15.38.62)
Downloaded files: 3 (0.03 KB)
Download time: 3 s

Avast now shows current version to be 0611-2 but did show that version 0611-1 was the version that Avast was using before this. So even though the Manual Update says “Vps: Already up to date”, according to Avast before I ran the Manuel Update it was NOT “Aleady up to date”.

click Change/Remove from the next window scroll down and select Repair and click Next,

I do not have a button to click named “Change/Remove”. I have a button that is named “Add/Remove”. I am using WIN98SE and perhaps this is why. I do not remember if in the past by clicking this “Add/Remove” button I get a further opportunity to change my mind or make other choices. If by clicking the “Add/Remove” in my case and Avast is the REMOVED then this is obviously not what I want to do. Most likely this button will do what DavidR says it will do and will give me another option to “Repair” Avast as it likely runs an install/remove program that Avast has originally installed on my machine in the first place. But I thought I’d make sure just in case. ???

Also one other comment: when I updated the VPS manually the only function I could find to do this is (right clicking on the Avast icon in the systray) and then going to “Updating” then going to “iAVS Update”. I presume this is the method of updating the “VPS” database. [u]What is misleading is that what is commonly called the “VPS update” for the Anitivus signature file database is called “iAVS Update” by the Avast program, assuming I did the right thing which it appears I did.

I guess anything to not be consistent and more confusing for non-computer experts. (even though I was a computer programmer for over 13 years and have repaired computers as well I have never considered myself an expert) as I am always learning and forgetting and often surprised by results that were unexpected :-[

It will give you more options after that… like update, repair, change, and uninstall.

Correct.

Tech, I don’t think the option to Repair is included with W98SE …

Quoting lakrsrool:

Anyway, lakrsrool, it seems you are now up-to-date. Perhaps this was just a minor glitch that showed the incorrect 0611-1 instead of the 0611-2 that you actually already had.

I still have W98SE on my old computer but never really had an up-dating problem. And even today, the old computer is still on dial-up.

I’m forgetting all things about Windows 98…
I know when Vista will be released I’ll forget XP…
Sorry.

Thanks for the reply, I sure wouldn’t want to click the “remove” button to find that all I’d be doing is actuall removing Avast. More problems I don’t need.

So does this mean that WIN98SE users do not have a method to “repair” avast ?

Or is there another way to do this and if so how ?

Actually I orignally got this error (incase you hadn’t read the thread from the beginning

Since Avast reported that I was still on v 0611-1 I assumed that it did not update to v 0611-2. But maybe it did and just failed to update the Avast program to show the new version as the on being used. ???

When I ran the manual update I did get 2 different scanning bars (actually 3 but one had 2 scanning bars in the same window and it didn’t say it was “VPS” whatever that was) at two different times which both said that it was for the VPS update so maybe it installed twice and found the current database already installed on the 2nd install. Who knows… ???

Like you say maybe I’m back to normal now and the autoupdate will work with further no problems ;D

On WIN98SE I know I’m ancient but I like WIN98SE it does certain things that are lost in the new Windows OS’s. Of course the dial-up is because I’m cheap. 8)

Did you try double clicking the last setup.exe file?

No, the incremental VPS could be donwloaded again, you’ll see the installation progress bar…
But they are NOT installed twice. avast detect it and reinstall (over, the only one) it.
