Update failure & servers.def file

There are increasing number of issues related to update failure due to servers.def file being corrupt or 0KB last days.

  1. Why?
  2. Can’t the backup servers.def.lkg (last known good version) be used these times? Why does it have also 0KB or is corrupt?
  3. If so, what is the purpose of servers.def.lkg file?
  4. Is it related to 4.7.844 version? The Beta 4.7.855 is not showing, apparently, this problem…
  5. Is there any relation between this and the way the user connect the Internet?

The only thing that I have been thinking is that if during update of the servers.def file the connection somehow fails leaving the servers.def file corrupt or 0KB.

However, why the servers.def.lkg doesn’t do the job it is supposed to do and replace it (unless that too is corrupt or 0KB) is beyond me and kind of defeats the purpose of having such a backup.

Personally I have never had a problem with this (but I have seen an increase in the forums with this error recently) and I have a dial-up connection that can be flaky at times.

Beta 4.7.855 ??

Yeah…
Just download the ashbeta.exe file…

I doubt that there will be much feedback on this as a problem in 4.7.855 beta since the beta test sample is likely to be small as it hasn’t been generally notified on the forums. Plus even though we are seeing an increase in this servers.def problem, it would be very small across avast 4.7.844, otherwise it wouldn’t be a trickle but a flood on the forums.

The only mention I’ve see on a beta running is in relation to the issue with win2k and folder permission/privileges, etc. when it was offered to those win2k users with a problem.

I have a fairly educated guess as to why my servers.def file became corrupted. I bought a under-powered power supply when I put together my last system in January.

The Summer heat in the house (no air-conditioning) finally put too much stress on the power supply. This caused the automatic protection circuits in the power supply to periodically shut itself off and back on. Finally, it degraded to a point where the power to the system was bouncing every 5 to 15 seconds.

I’m sure at some point, the system lost power while the servers.def file was open or something like that. My user profile was also corrupted by this behavior but a System Restore handled that problem.

Thanks - I had the file but didn’t know there was a new beta available.

Edit: What’s new in this version?

No official word about them

Well, it’s a mystery - it’s really not clear where the problems might come from :frowning:
The setup guys will implement some additional backup / recovery means for the servers.def file in the next avast! build, so let’s hope it will help.

Well, thanks for coming Igor 8)
Hope the improvements do not stop and we can have a better and more stable product each time 8)
