What are you actually trying to update ?
Both the Program and Virus definition updates can be found here - avastUI, Maintenance, Update.

You can’t re-register from the UI until there is less than 30 days remaining (or possibly 28), at that point the Register interface changes to allow for re-registration.

Please be so kind as to tell us, which version of avast free you have on your husbands machine. You should concentrate apon updating the ‘avast’ program.
If you don’t know, where to find the ‘avast’ program version and virus database definitons:
rightclick on the ‘avast’-icon (on taskbar) , then choose ‘About avast’. Report, what you found.
Edit: Which internet-browser do you use there (Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome)?

[b]He is using Avast! Free Antivirus 8.0.1483 Internet Explorer 8 the updated are updated I make sure that is done he forgets at times and then pauses them

That browser is a bit outdated considering IE 10 has already been released.
IE10 do not work in XP.
[b]I would not use IE10 on XP anyway his desktop needs to be replaced just waiting on getting it done.
