Update Message in Avast 4.8 Pro

I have Avast 4.8 Pro installed on two machines.

I continue to get an “Update Message” pop up about 10 minutes after I turn the computers on. I don’t want to go to the expense of updating at this time, but would very much like to be able to STOP the continued interruption this “pop up” incurs.

Is there a way to stop the display please?

Thanks…\

The program can be updated free of charge and it has so many new features and a much better interface. Why not update it? Its worth updating as it will improve the performance as well ( this is what I was told) anyway lots of new features in the new version so just consider updating

support for 4.x is ending soon, the plan was to end it with 2010 so it is running on overtime

if you have a valid 4.x pro license then it is free to upgrade, just install on top of the old and it will read the license info from the old install

I’d update. Otherwise, it will just get to the point where Avast 4.8 won’t be updateable anymore, and than what to do?

You could upgrade over the previous install, but because 6.0 is so much better and different, you might want to remove 4.8 through Add/Remove Programs before installing 6.0.

Than, after getting 6.0, wait about two minutes after the reboot, open up the Maintenance Tab and fill out the Registration form for your license. Fill out the form and click submit, and you are all set for updates and upgrades for 12 months.

Avast will tell you when it is time to renew. Than, just repeat the registration process. If you ever reinstall the program, you will need to re-register. But it’s much easier than on 4.8. (No confirmation e-mail needed, like in 4.8 ) Just fill out the form in versions 5 and 6, click submit, and your done!

Since the support for Avast v.4.0 will be ending VERY shortly, as mentioned earlier, you really should get the latest version of Avast on your machines or you will no longer get virus definition updates. Since you are going from v.4.8 to v.6.0x, a clean install is your better option. You will find that the newer version is much easier to use and quicker as well; you can opt for a Custom Install if you do not wish to install any toolbars or gadgets.

How to uninstall and do a clean install of Avast:

  1. Save a copy of Avast and save it to your HDD:
http://www.avast.com/download-software – all products (Free, Pro, AIS)
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe and save it to your HDD.
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
  5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the new Avast Uninstall Tool. Uninstall ALL previous versions and products of Avast you had on this machine at this time.
  6. Reboot.
  7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
  8. Get Internet access and register your copy for Free:
    Free – http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php
  9. Update the Avast definitions.
