"Update now ..." links in Update settings

Using the Avast free edition (currently using the beta release but the issue relates to all versions back to 4.5) with WinXP SP2.

within the Avast program settings is the Update (Basic) window.

Within that window are the updates settings for the virus database and for the program. Each section contains a link “Update now…”.

On my system those links have never performed any function. On searching through the forums I see others report that the links do not respond for them.

I cannot find an explanation for this lack of response to these links. Are they supposed to do anything? If so, any hints on how to make them work?

It should do the same as right clicking the avast tray icon and using the Updating command (i.e. do some stuff and then display a summary screen). It does not on your machine?

Thanks

It does nothing … I just checked with a friend who uses Avast (using the current release version) and the same no response to clicking those links.

There are a few other users who have reported the links do nothing in this forum too (but usually in concert with reporting other updating problems).

Automatic updating of the virus definitions works fine for me as does the “program update” option from the “Updating” line in the right click menu.

You’re probably right. I’ll get it fixed. Interesting, it was working last time I checked but it doesn’t seem to be now… Thanks for the heads up.

Aha, I got it. It depends on how you open the settings window.
It does NOT work if you open it directly from the avast tray icon context menu.

I did not know there was another way to open the settings window.

Now I see that it can be opened from the menu on the main program window. And yes, then the links do work for me too.
