Update of virus definitions fails - latest update 19 May 2017

I have 2 pcs with Avast anti-virus (free) installed. Today (20 May 2017) Avast failed to update its virus definitions on both pcs.

After the auto update failed I tried a manual update of the definitions. It came back with “unknown error”. Existing definitions on my desktop are 18-8, it will not update to the latest, which I think is dated 19 May 2017. Looking in the log of my firewall, the last file to be downloaded is vps32_159c_159b.vpx size 1025042 bytes. I get the same result on my laptop, except as I have not used it for a while the existing definitions are from 12 May 2017.

Having tried and failed to auto update and manual update, a further manual update states the definitions are up to date.

I looked in the Avast Update log file and the final entry for today’s attempt is:

Anyone else having problems?

The version of Avast antivirus I am using is 2015.10.2208. It is not the latest but until today virus definition update have been fine.

Does avast give any error messages?

Do you recive stream updates?

The problem is that you are using a real old avast version.
Perform a clean installation with the latest one.

You can easily fix this problem.

Download Avast virus database installer exe from the Avast website. https://www.avast.com/download-update

In your case select Avast update for versions 2014-2016.

After you run that file, your Avast automatic update works again.

They released bad vps update, so thats why old Avast versions went broken.

For this rare fault it is an easier solution than updating the whole program across 3 pcs. Last time I updated the Avast free antivirus was when an earlier version refused to accept a new licence key after the first year. I only use the file shield so the other features that have been added over the years are lost on me. However reliable operation is important, and apart from the licence key issue and now this online update problem, I have found Avast works and I have been using it since at least 2010.

The problem still exists that by not updating the program, you’re missing out on all the new technology protecting against the newest malware.
