Update Problem Again?

Receiving package is broken! It seems that immediate auto update at start up crashes Vista, why can’t I update manually like in the older version without the caution sign over the Avast ball?I have had to uninstall and reinstall 3 times now!
Avast 6.0.1 ,Vista

I suspect all your problems would be solved by reformatting and installing some working OS, e.g. W7 SP1. :stuck_out_tongue:

If you dislike the above advise, a memory dump will be required to debug your issues (usually in in C:\Windows\Minidump).

If you get this error, rather than reinstall avast! (or the off the wall suggestion to get another OS) - Try a repair of avast. Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Thank you DavidR for the quick reply and help.I tried that but comes up with an error ,something about try manually! And Doctornotor I can’t believe that is a reply from an EVANGELIST,is that the only help you can provide, seems quite a bit of overkill for a system that works great in all other aspects! But again,I would really appreciate an option to manually update!

Well, I have my opinion firmly set wrt Vista. Anyway, what I said about the memory dump being required is fully valid, otherwise noone will tell you why you get BSOD on avast update. If you have a different problem, then please do not write “auto update at start up crashes Vista” and explain better.

Well I would suggest to have a cleaning of your registry then defrag your hard disk and then try latest build.
If that doesn’t help then do experience people has advised ;D

Try starting Vista with the Last Known Good Config

Then do a clean install of Avast.

Thanks for all of the help,I did a complete uninstall/reinstall again!
Doktor,I wrote that auto update crashes my Vista because that is exactly the time that it crashes, at start up,but it does not crash if Avast is already updated only when Avast is trying to update at start!Again, why no option for manual update without all of the caution, unsecured warnings?

Would you be so kind to clearly and specifically explain what do you mean by “auto update crashes my Vista”. What happens?

@ urlnts,

After doing the uninstall/clean install, are you still having to do manual updates and getting the caution sign over the Avast ball? If so, please check the following settings listed below…

Open Avast GUI > Settings > Updates >

A. Engine and Virus Definitions:

  • Automatic Update (default)
  • For “Manual” or “Ask When Update Available ” > Settings > Status Bar > Uncheck the last box

B. Update Parameters: all boxes unchecked (default)

  • If you use DSL, you may want to set #2 above to “My computer is permanently connected to the Internet.”
  • If you use dial-up, you will want to use #2 above to “I only connect to the Internet using dial-up modem.”

C. Proxy Settings: Auto Detect using IE Settings (default)

  • Some people have found that using “Direct connection / No Proxy” have worked for them.
  • Use “Specify Proxy Server” if you use a proxy and complete the information below it for the proxy server > click “OK.”

Recheck your settings. If needed, change to the item marked in blue above and reboot. See if this resolves your problem.

In your next reply, please let us know the following:

  1. How do you connect to the Internet?
  2. Did this problem start after installing or downloading something (can you correlate it to something?) Is you machine acting normally otherwise?
  3. When you uninstalled Avast did you uninstall ALL previous versions and products of Avast on this machine prior to reinstalling the new version?
  4. What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:
  • Antivirus (AV)
  • Firewall (FW)
  • Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
  • Other security software
  • If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor’s uninstaller’s tool or another way)?

Thank you.
