I downloaded an update this morning for avast. When after it rebooted everything seemed fine. until I went to close out an application. I noticed avast multiplying. with no signs of stopping. I can erase the clones by mousing over. but it keeps cloning.
I should also add that I cannot gain access to the normal avast program
I think it might be best to try a repair first of avast via programs and features but i dont hold much hope, you might have to do a clean install im afraid.
Read and follow the instructions here for uninstalling http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and follow with a fresh install.
Note that after you have completed the removal process and rebooted back into normal mode there are two leftover avast folders, one in program files and the other in program data - delet them.
What didn’t work, the repair or the clean install ? have you also removed any other AV or preinstalled AV that might still be installed and run removal tools to rid any leftovers ?
Some details about your system and what security you have installed would also help us

The only real difference between our systems are that iv removed just about all of the Asus bundled rubbish like the express gate cloud, the charger plus, asus live update,Splendid Video, Creative THX - you get better sound without this one, Power4Gear, Asus virtual Camera, and via services iv set the turbo boost to automatic so that the system stays at 2.9 Ghz and i dont have to have the turbo gadget on the sidebar to make turbo work.
Did you run the tool i posted prior to your last? once you’ve run the tool reboot then repair avast again just in case it was corrupted, if still no go then all i can recommend is another clean install
Ah well that is some progress, now do a clean install again as i mentioned in reply 1, Trend would have corrupted your install before.
Also a good idea is to run something like CCleaner after all the uninstalls just to tidy up, run the cleaner and the registry clean also, once you’ve re installed avast go into CCleaner - applications and untick the box for avast and any other security apps you have, even defender which you can safely disable anyway as it’s not needed.
Well after several hours of avast messing with my pc. nothing new has changed. The only thing I can think of that CAN fix this situation. is getting an older version of avast and not update.
Oh and now anytime I click the infinite error message away. avast will just tell me the virus database updated hence adding yet another problem to the list.
Sorry that after all this it has been very uneventful for you, not sure what would be doing this for you though other than maybe some of the default preinstalled software that Asus install on these systems as that is essentially the only difference between your’s and mine, just stick with the 6 version you obtained for now and hopefully avast will soon release another version so just keep an eye on the forums and when it’s released monitor it for a while just to make sure that things are stable
