Update problem with v 4.8

Since installing the 4.8 version I have had several problems with my system (running Windows XP Home) these include IE crashing and other software stopping to function, however after reading through the posts of the last few days and disabling the root kit scan on start up, the self defence module and also doing a repair Avast through the Add/Remove programmes my system is now seems much more stable. One thing I am unsure of is this entry in my Event Viewer:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: avast!
Event Category: Client
Event ID: 90
Date: 31/03/2008
Time: 21:58:18
User: N/A
Computer: **************
Description:
Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0xC0000142, dwRes is C0000142.

Having checked the Avast log file there are no entries at all recorded in any of the categories.

Any advice would be most welcome.

The repair would most likely have fixed the error from the event viewer.

What were the other problems, and what other security software are you running ?

Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Hi DavidR, The other security software I have installed is SpyBot, Spyware Blaster and I run A-squared scanner occasionally. Other problems I have had since installing the new version are my Comodo takes longer to initialise and the Avast funtions (I only use 4) are slow to start up also IE has crashed a few times plus I use Pop Peeper and that has shut down or not functioned at times. As you say the repair function may well have sorted some things out, I am thinking that if I had done a clean install it may have avoided these snags.

Hi Tech, Is this what you wanted or do I need to go further back - I could email you the full log if it would help.

Thanks to you both for taking the time to help out, much appreciated as always.

east yorkie, I see nothing wrong in your log.
But there were some ‘bug’ fixes into update process (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34322.msg287461#msg287461).
Maybe you can test again and see if the error appears.

Hi Tech, Thanks for checking the log for me at the moment all seems well I got a VPS update automatically tonight (080402-0). What about the rootkit scan on startup and the self-defense module is it best to leave them disabled for now and if so do you know if any new builds are planned to fix the issues they appear to cause?

A question: if you reenable the self-defense module, do things like

  • avast updating
  • changing of avast settings via the Settings dialog
    work?

If not, could you please do what I described here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34246.msg287604#msg287604

?

Thanks
Vlk
