I keep getting a message that says I need to reinstall avast because my system has been upgraded. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times and keep getting the same message. I am running XP. I even used the uninstall utility on your website. The problems started when a trojan was detected in one of the avast files on my computer. Any suggestions?

I would suggest that you try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work, uninstall using add remove programs and the uninstall utility, reboot, install.
Was it avast that reported to trojan or some other program? There have been a number of reported false positive problems with spy sweeper and when action was taken in spy sweeper, it screwed avast.
If avast reported it (which I find hard to believe) answer the avast related questions as well.
- What OS are you using? is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 0436-4 (see about avast!)
- What was the virus name, what was the filename, where was it found
example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?
- What actions have you taken to try and resolve the problem?
Avast detected it when it was testing its memory when I first started to run the program. I uninstalled it so I can’t tell which version it was. It was a fairly recent version though. I regrettably did not write down what trojan or what file was infected. I am running XP with SP2. Since then I have reinstalled and been able to run a boot scan despite the need to update message and it has not detected any more trojans. I did restart my computer after the uninstall. Right now it is uninstalled until I can figure out what the problem is.
Uninstall avast, delete the reg key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ALWIL Software and reinstall avast.
This will solve the problem.
BTW - did you upgrade your OS or not? (I mean like from Win98 to XP…).

When you upgrade your operational system, you must uninstall avast > updgrade de operational system > install avast again
