Update program is not working

Message popped up and I accepted to update however it is hanging in Step 1 of 3 and nothing is happening. What is also odd is that it is telling me my virus definitions are out of date amd was last updated in 1970! see screenshot

Tried update Engine and Virus defininitioms and the same thing - just hangs at step1 of 2 with no progress

This is on a new win7 machine which has been set up for around a fortnight. Any suggestions fratefully accepted

what AV did you have before installing avast ?
have you removed it ?
it is recomended to run a removal tool to clear all leftovers

avast repair
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

  1. Reboot and wait 10 minutes.
  2. Only run the (manual) program update. (It will also update the defs.)
    Solved…??

I had free Avast on this machine when I collected it. I uninstalled that version before loading the AIS.
Date & time settings are all correct and are unchanged. I am waiting the 10 minutes as per Asyn’s suggestion. Will try the manual program update. If that fails I will try a repair and let you know what happens in any evemt

Ok, awaiting your reply.

  1. Download: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
