Update progress ?

Can anyone tell me if there is any way I can set avast to show some sort of notification that an update is in progress.

When ever I advise anyone to install avast, this is nearly always the first and normally the only complaint I hear back from them, that they get an error message saying avast cannot be updated.

I think an update in progress symbol of some sort in the system tray would result in new users of avast feeling a lot happier not getting an error message because they have unknowingly disconnected to early.

Thanks
Gerry

avast does show an indication that an update is in progress unless you have disabled the display.

The error you are getting is nothing to do with showing an update in progress, rather one that is more than likely being blocked by the firewall, avast.setup requires internet access in order to update. So the user at some point is likely to have denied access when asked for permission by their firewall.

Thanks David

I didn’t know that existed (perhaps it should be on by default)
Happy with that.

The error message they are getting is because these guys are typically on dialup and only connect to check emails which means they are sometimes only online for a few seconds resulting in disconnection halfway through an update.

I’ve been downloading the daily movie, its awesome.

It is on (or should be) by default, I’ve never changed mine.

Unfortunately there is nothing that avast can do about that because it doesn't establish a connection, it checks if one is present and if so checks for updates. Once they establish a connection avast will check again usually after 30-40 seconds.

They could change the Program Settings, Update (Basic) autoupdate to ‘Ask when update is available’ for both VPS and Program updates (that is my setting on dial-up) or switch to Manual updates (not really dvisable for the forgetful).

No, on dial-up there is no way I'm even going to attempt any movie download. I will certainly start to follow it.

The largest formation I was in was a 50 way group of Skydivers from the Military which was a very long time ago, it was interesting as we all bought Sky Blue systems and matching jumpsuits so finding slots was fun. The only aid was 5 different coloured pop-tops in the base 10. I did just over 2,700 descents before I finally called it a day, well my knees called it a day ;D
