I’m using Avast4 with a free license and recently it started acting up. My problem is that Avast keeps bugging me with notifications about updating to Avast5 eventhough I have program updates set to Manual under Settings->Update. Why does Avast have this option if it ignores it and just keeps bombarding me with messages to update?

While avast 5 is still going through some “growing pains”, the current build (418, if I haven’t missed something) has cleaned up the vast majority of the problems from, say, 377.
When important updates are released (usually security related) it may well override the Manual update setting to notify the user, but it won’t go so far as to attempt to install.
What I really liked about avast was that you were not assaulted by pop-ups and commercial banners everywhere. You had a great deal of freedom to customize it yourself. I’ve been perfectly content with the program for over 3 years now.
I can understand that it should alert me of a vital upgrade, ONCE. Too keep pestering me, DESPITE my settings drives me nuts.
I will probably upgrade to avast5 eventually, unless I try something different this time. I have my reasons not to upgrade at once. As long as new definition files are still released for avast4, I don’t feel I have to rush anything.
