Update to 4.0.1466 is blocking all web and mail traffic

Hello,

after upgrading to the latest version of avast free antivirus (version 7.0.1466 german), all web and email traffic is blocked. This is for all websites, even big ones as google, and also the avast website itself.
This is for both IE and Firefox browsers. If I deactivate Web-Protection (“Web-Schutz”), everything works well, but as soon as I reactivate it, nothing comes through.
The same is happening to Thunderbird when I have Email-Protection (“Web-Schutz”) enabled. No connections can be established (POP, IMAP, SMTP). Disable Email-Protection and everything works.
All settings are default settings. I have been using previous versions for years without ever having problems.
I have no other anti-virus software installed. I do have Comodo Firewall installed, but have disabled it so that it is not loaded at startup.
What can I do?

Thanks…

  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??
I do have Comodo Firewall installed, but have disabled it so that it is not loaded at startup.
try this...... delete all avast rules in comodo, reboot and create new rules

Well…

Asyn… I give you a what did a say ;D when/if i find one of those old avast/comodo problem post…

i am 110% sure there has been on or two of these before, where the OP did the same, disabled comodo…and after lots of debate he finaly tried deleting the rules and it worked

anyway if it does not work it will not do any damage

Sure, it won’t hurt to try.

This is Windows XP Home SP 3, 32 bit, with pretty much all Windows updates as they came out.
No other security software besides Comodo firewall, which is currently disabled, as I said.
Windows Firewall is disabled.

Re. deleting rules in Comodo, which ones exactly are you talking about?
I have the following 3 screens with options to select from.
Is deleting them without adding them again enough for now?

Also, I found the following entries in the Mail.log:

Maybe this gives you a hint…
I tried Google, but didn’t come up with any obvious (at least to me) hints or solutions.

Thanks…

Re. deleting rules in Comodo, which ones exactly are you talking about?
i am talking about all avast rules... i have no idea where in comodo you find it as i have never used comodo
  1. Download avast! Free Antivirus: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Set Comodo FW and D+ to training mode.
  4. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  5. Reboot.
  6. Set Comodo FW and D+ back to your preferred mode.

Asyn,

do I need to remove some of the rules/settings in Comodo before I start doing this?

Thanks,

Mark

I have the same problem with the latest Avast on our Windows XP machine. No problems on our Windows 7 machines. I do not have Comodo or any other firewall installed (I turned off Windows Firewall to see if it made any difference).

I am running Windows XP, v 2002, SP3. It happens in Explorer and Firefox. The most common error screen I get is “connection was reset”. If I turn off Avast shields, the problem disappears and I can get to any site with no problem. I am only trying sites like google, yahoo, speedtest, and amazon.

You can use the “Clean Up” function in the FW and D+ after point 2.

Uninstall and new install fixed the problem - thanks guys!

You’re welcome.
