Hi, I am, until now, a happy user of Avast Free anti-virus. However, a few days ago I began to get the prompt to update to version 7.0.1483. However, each time I try to do this I am propmted to re-boot and when I do my PC locks up at the beginning of the re-boot and the re-boot fails. I have to switch of the power, boot up in safe mode and then do system restore to the point before I tried to update. As I say, until now I have been really happy with avast, but if I can not solve this will have to look at some alternative as avast is now not updating at all.
I am a Windows Vista user and also have Spybot and Malwarebytes on my computer.
I’d be grateful for any advice as I am a reformed luddite and definitely not a techie.
Many people are having the same or similar issue after recently updating. Avast has not responded to anything yet as far as I can tell. I’m in the same boat as you, only with Windows XP. Right after updating I had to cycle power because windows wouldn’t boot up. After that, it’s been a nightmare for 5 days.
I updated my test PC last night - unfortunately I didn’t notice what it SAID it wanted to update to. However it actually updated to 8.0.1483
I plan to update my ‘real’ PC shortly which, like you is asking to update to 7.0.1483 I’ll report back when I do.
However, that said - In your position I would make a fresh restore point, then backup my PC, then download the latest Avast and then unplug it from the internet and uninstall Avast and then reboot and install the one I just downloaded. Once installed OK reconnect to the internet and allow it to update or force an update via the maintenance screen.
I had the same issue (including a Vista machine but no other virus/malware tool) and used the same route to resolution. I then did a clean uninstall with the removal tool and a fresh instal of Avast 8. Same thing happened (hang on reboot). So I did the removal thing again and did a fresh install of the old version 7. Life is good.
Today, another pop-up from Avast! inviting me to upgrade my Pro version running on a Vista 64 platform. And another failure on reboot. Avast!!! For shame. >:(
I just hit the Avast!!! pro setup shortcut on my desktop. I placed this on my desk top when I originally installed Avast!!!Pro. The clean uninstall app did not erase the desktop shortcut. The command is below. Paste this in your browser address bar and see what happens. I also ran CCleaner64 to clean up the loose ends in the registry.
As far as I can tell the prompt is lying, there is no 7.0.1483 … it’s actually 8.0.1483, the latest version available. So don’t update until they fix these reboot problems on XP/Vista machines.

Are you suggesting we’re all blind and stupid?. There are multiple threads about this anomoly of the upgrade notifier showing version 7.0. 1483 NOT Version 8.0 1483 for XP and Vista users. This is what is causing half the problems mate.
Obvious that Avast developers were trying to push the new V8 update on V7 users, screwed up and put the wrong 7.1483 update version (as several people have shown images of), further screwed up by replacing the definition green pop-up with the same erroneous blue 7.1483 notifier every time the definitions update.
Not that people come on this forum to report that something actually worked, but ever since the wrong 7.1483 got coded on the V7 GUI, it doesn’t look like anybody updating to V8 through the GUI or clicking on the bogus blue update pop-up has had success. I personally know of two XP users that tried the bogus 7.1483 this week even though I told them to ignore it and of course they have had nothing but problems. As I’m writing this, I just got another blue notifier of the wrong version 7.1483 instead of the green definition update pop-up (this XP still on V7).
We are a week or more into this problem and nobody from Avast has come on here addressing this issue…very frustrating.
Yesterday, Avast prompted me to update, and I did. Then it wanted to restart, so I said okay. A while later I came back to my computer, totally black screen, dead. I tried restarting again, same thing. I have a dual screen setup, and I finally turned on the second monitor, and there was a notification that the computer could try to fix the start-up error. I said okay, not holding out much hope, but it did, and life got back on track. The Avast update caused the problem but didn’t even apply an update because I’m still getting notifications to do the same update, and I’m afraid to try it again.
I’m a first time Avast customer, have been using Symantec and Kaspersky in the past, and until now was very happy with Avast. Now I’m not so sure. I never had an issue like this with the other antivirus softwares.
Bob3160 - I can read and did not put the incorrect reference number that comes up when Avast prompts you to update. Not being a techie means I’m not as good with IT as people such as yourself, not that I’m totally stupid.
I sent in a ticket a couple of days ago and have received a reply asking me to supply my “memory dump” to Avast’s helpdesk. I’m now trying to understand the instructions they sent with as to how to do this! Things were so much easier when everything could be fixed with a hammer and screwdriver. :-[
