Update

Any suggestions? I have autoupdate checked in preferences.

What version of the virus database do you have at the moment?

right click avast icon–>about avast–>vps file
-current is:090408-0

can you do a manual update?
right click avast icon–>updating–>iAVS update

what firewall do you have installed?

Also tell us what system you are using, winXP, vista etc.

What version of the virus database do you have at the moment? 4.8 Home edition

can you do a manual update? Yes

what firewall do you have installed? Zone Alarm free (have been using this with Avast for years before this problem arose)

Also tell us what system you are using, winXP, vista etc. XP SP3

Didn’t have problem with autoupdating until about 1½ weeks ago. Can’t remember making any substantial change to system.

Personally I keep my nose out of the logs as for the most part the content is verbose and not to helpful to a user, more so for a developer. Only if I experience a problem with avast or hard errors are displayed to the screen do I look in the logs.

So are you getting any errors displayed to the screen or other avast problems ?

If not I wouldn’t worry about this.

Re updates and ZA.
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

However, since manual updates work, this isn’t the problem, so you may need to delay the update check…

You need to edit (using notepad) the [InetWD] section of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\avast4.ini file and add the following line (depending on your connection type enter one or other of the Bold lines below):
Dial-up connections, add this line: RASWaitSeconds=120
Broadband connections, add this line: AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120

[InetWD] AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120 Or RASWaitSeconds=120
When complete save the changes, avast's self-defence module will ask for confirmation, etc. answer Yes.

The figure is seconds and the above equates to two minutes, you could try that and adjust upwards if required, 180, 240, etc.

Sanderson, I won’t worry about that messages that are, mostly, verbose of the logs.
Can you manually update avast? If so, I won’t worry.

Welcome to the forums, sanderson.

Just for clarafication, for this question :

What version of the virus database do you have at the moment?

right click avast icon–>about avast–>vps file
-current is:090408-0

The answer you gave :

What version of the virus database do you have at the moment? 4.8 Home edition

This is the program version you gave. Please see the question above for the example given so that you can supply the correct answer.

virus database = 090407-0

It should be 090409-0

It is, now that I have MANUALLY updated. That is the problem - it will not auto update.

And have you tried what I suggested of delaying the update check in Reply #3 ?

Do you use a Proxy to connect to the internet ?

Made the recommended change. Waiting to see if updates tomorrow. No proxy.

I would suggest that you set that specific option (rather than auto detect) in the avast Program Settings, Update (Connections), Proxy button, see image.

DavidR - Thanks for the suggestions. I made the changes and am now getting auto updates

You’re welcome, thanks for the feedback.
