Hi polonus ,
Yes I’ve used the Filehippo.com update checker in the past . I found it quite useful , although I was a little wary having a third party scanning my computer . I found no obvious ill effects such as spam , promotional material nuisances , or malware .
Similar to the Secunia Software Inspector , which as you’d know is based more on alerting to vulnerabilities in outdated , compromised software versions. I feel a lot more comfortable using it I’d have to say ,
Cheers ,
Tony
like it damian and like it because as says on the link-Note: The application does not require installation and may be run directly from the desktop or download folder
Well,I thought this sounded really good,so I just downloaded it,then I had to download Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 ( 186mb ) :o Then I warned to check for windows updates.Did a scan, then decided to get rid.Wasn’t sure if it was safe to delete Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0,SO ended up doing system restore to 2 days ago.It passed half an hour though ;D. Why do I do these things !!!

" ... I just downloaded it,then I had to download Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 ( 186mb ) ..."Should hang on to Microsoft .NET Framework , lot of really light but powerful programs rely on it , plus good programmers . It's at v.3.0 so hanging on to v2.0.50727 would have been a good idea , we learn from our mistakes . I know , I've made plenty of them ;D
Filehippo.com update checker (?) , handy tool .
Yes,it does seem like a handy tool.It found 4 updates, newer versions ( not security issues ) and it found 3 beta updates, good if you like experimenting with new programs.
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0I believe the current version is 3.5
The problem with .NET framework is some versions also require the installation of the previous version. I can’t recall if version 3.0 required that version 2.0 was installed, I don’t know if version 3.5 has any prerequisites.
I started out with version 1.0, installed the 1.1 update and then version 2.0, this didn’t require that version 1 was installed so I uninstalled version 1.1. Unfortunately version 3.0 doesn’t seem to have the roll up cumulative installation function.
I’m still on version 2.0 and two updates to that have failed to install no matter what I have tried. Personally if one of my programs didn’t require .NET I wouldn’t touch it with a big stick.
David,
Problem Uninstalling .Net 1.1 and 2.0 Framework can be solved by utilizing the
dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip program. It’s available from MS or you can download it directly from me:
http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip
dotNetFx35setup.exe (The latest version) is also available from MySharedFiles
I never had any problem with uninstalling .net 1.1 and I still have 2.0 as I have a program that requires it; the only problem I ever had was the failure of two updates for .net 2.0.
I have used Update Checker and it seems to work very well. My problem is that what it finds are large updates which takes forever on dial-up … not the fault of Update Checker, though.
