Updated and now Avast says I'm protected, Windows says I'm not

Hi guys!

I updated my Avast tonight and when the update finished and I rebooted my computer Windows notified me that my computer was unprotected. It’s saying that I have no antivirus running, and offers the option to turn Windows defender or avast on. I tried turning avast on with those tools, but nothing happened.

Avast is showing that I’m protected, but I’m rather worried if avast is indeed working as Windows says it isn’t.

Forgot to add that I’m running a 2 month old Samsung laptop with Windows 8 on it.

This has been reported several times recently and three reboots seems to fix the issue.

Hi!
I’ve rebooted 7-10 times now and the issue is still there. Any other steps I should take or should I just boot a few times more?

Follow the instructions posted by essexboy in the link I supplied you, there are some scripts to reset the action centre.

I tried it (and I think I did it right but I’m not 100% sure) and the problem is still there.
Should I try rebooting a few times or something?

Also, is my actually protected right now…?

Yes you could try rebooting again, strange that it hasn’t rectified the problem yet though.

If the avast service is running in Task Manager you are protected.

What version of avast did you update from ? if all else fails I’d suggest doing a clean install as something maybe corrupted.

I tried rebooting 3 times after following the instructions and still no change.
Could you possibly give me step to step on what to do and what to press on the instructions provided in the link? I’m unsure if I did it right as I’m not terribly good with computers.

Avast is running in task manager.

I think it may be better just to perform a clean install, download and run the avast removal tool http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe when you click to run the tool it will ask to boot to safe mode, accept and it will reboot and when the tool opens choose from the dropdown list the version of avast you need to clear and run.

“Note” download a fresh copy of avast and save first if you haven’t saved previously http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=136785.msg1000473 then download and run the removal tool.

I followed your instructions craigb and the new install seemed to work!

This is what task manager looks like right now, is this right?

Avast is saying it’s protected.
