Last night I did an avast update and then went to bed. That was the last thing done.
Now none of my programs open. Windows opens up but every program you try to open says ‘the application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application.’
I can’t even open up command prompt and it won’t even open from ‘run as administrator’.
Tried logging in via the kids login but the same thing happens.
I’m on windows 7 64 bit.
Any help would be fantastic.
Thanks.
Would there be a conflict between the latest Avast update and Windows 7?
Have tried various forums with no luck. Really hoping someone has a possible solution.
Thanks
Ash.
Perform a clean installation of the latest version.
Thanks Eddy
Managed to get in via my kids login and disable avast for an hour. Everything started working again.
Then did a clean install as you suggested and everything is back to normal.
Thanks for your help.
Ash.
Always good to hear a problem is solved.
Keep an eye on it for e.g. the next week and if the problem comes back, let us know here.
False alarm. I got a bit excited.
Just restarted the PC and the same thing has just happened.
So I uninstalled Avast. Ran Ccleaner, malwarebytes and all clear.
Downloaded the latest install from the Avast website and installed it. Then restarted.
Now I am back to where I started. Just turned Avast off for an hour and hey presto, everything is working again.
There is definitely some conflict with Avast’s latest update and my PC. I have Win 7, 64bit.
Any ideas would be super helpful.
Thanks
Ash.
There is only one way to perform a real clean installation of avast.
- Remove avast through control panel
- Run avastclear
- Remove all leftovers manually (folders, files, registry entries)
- Install the (latest) avast version with the offline installer
If that doesn’t solve it, provide more details.
What exact OS/SP ?
What exact version of avast ?
Is there any other security (related) software installed ? (or was there)
My computer is going from bad to worse now. Can only work it in safe mode.
I tried uninstalling avast again and reinstalling but now it won’t even go on. Seems to be some conflict now.
I run Win 7x64. Service pack 1 build 7601. The version of avast is just the latest one. There was AVG on there too at one stage.
I’m really desperate now.
I really appreciate any help. Thanks.
Ash
It can be a conflict with leftovers from AVG.
Make sure everything from it is removed > http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities
I have run both the AVG remover tool and the Avast Clear.
I followed these instructions from someone on this forum.
Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed
https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB204
If Repair doesn’t fix the problem, try the following:
Clean Install of Avast:
https://goo.gl/4Ptzkf
Now in safe mode with network connection I get:
UI Failed to Load.
This is really embarrassing.
AV Service is not responding.
Exit or Restart Service.
I’m going to try now in normal mode. Restart and go from there.
That is normal.
avast doesn’t work in safe mode.
Enable the real administrator account and see if you boot into that in normal mode.
Have started in normal mode and I’m back to where it all started.
‘the application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application.’
The 1st one to come up is always LULnchr.exe but I don’t have a quick cam and I checked my logitech cam and it is all up to date.
Every single application does this.
When I click on Avast from the bottom right toolbar, I get a big white box on my screen with nothing on it.
I then just tried to disable Avast for 1 hour.
Opened docs and still get the 0xc0000005 error. Nothing is opening still.
Now a new error keeps coming up.
::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683
Then is says server execution failed.
Sounds like you’re running an older version of Avast.
Right click the Avast icon in the system tray, select About what’s the exact version ???
Hi Bob
I did a clean install. I am not running an old version of avast. I uninstalled and then got the latest update.
The reason I have a blank black or white screen when I open avast is cos that is what everything is doing since I updated my version of avast.
None of my programs load since I made the updated. When I turn avast off for an hour or run in safe mode, every program opens and is available.
I’m still really keen if anyone has any suggestions. I am at a total loss as to what to do.
Thanks
Ash.
Decided to call Avast tech support, which is really AVG tech support. They told me Avast is the sister company to AVG.
You are supposed to get a free consult in which they will tell you what the problem is, but that never happened. Instead he tried to tell me how a few of the programs I’ve been using for years could ‘potentially’ contain viruses. That’s funny, as I run malwarebytes scan regularly and it has never been picked up.
Then without consulting or finding a problem I was put on to his tech support manager who sold me on a $39US tech support solution (I am based in Australia). I get a free AVG driver updater in that, which is normally $39 per year. I didn’t think about the ‘per year’ part.
The tech manager said included in this, the computer will absolutely be fixed. Cool.
So I thought he’d be running the fix, but as soon as the credit card payment went through, he handed me back to the original tech support guy who still hasn’t provided my free consult/diagnosis.
So here is what they have done on my paid support/fix:
Opened CMD and ran SFC /SCANNOW
Mine came back with ‘windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations.’
Now they are doing a full Microsoft windows malicious software removal tool scan on the full PC. By the look of it, this is going to take a full 60-90 minutes. Maybe even more. Scanned 450,000 files and the blue line has barely moved.
To run this they type in ‘mrt’ into command prompt.
I just ran the mrt on my laptop doing a quick scan and it took only a few minutes.
Will see if they can fix the PC as they promised.
2 hours in and mrt has scanned 4 million files. Still not even a quarter of the way through.
Would it be common to run a scan on a drive that Avast is not installed on?
It has finished scanning C drive but now they are scanning my backup 2TB drive.
Is that normal?
After support made a number of changes to my PC, they restarted but it never did. They ended up coming back after 30mins and told me to hold down the off button and start it again.
On restart it says Configuring windows updates 100% complete but has been hanging there for around 20 mins.
Now my PC won’t shut down and start up without hanging. Arggh.
I hope they can resolve this.
1 hour down the track and still sitting on 100% complete, the tech support’s manager reckons we need to wait another full hour on 100% complete.
He believes the computer isn’t hanging. Even after 90mins on the same 100% complete screen.
What a wasted day.
“They told me Avast is the sister company to AVG.”
Since Avast purchase AVG, the correct answer would have been that Avast is the parent company.
The only suggestion I can still make is to work with Avast support:
