i have updated from win98 to xp and no longer have the avast icon on my taskbar.i dont think avast updated virus database automatically ( i did a manual update though ) and am also unsure if it will check my mail. any help would be appreciated as i am a novice on the pc.
“Updated” from Win98 to XP? I believe you must have reinstalled the system… did you reinstall avast! as well?
no i didnt re install avast it is still on my desktop and working when i open it
how did you upgraded to win xp?
avast still on desktop??.. ???
more details please…
just had win98 running on my computer and inserted windows xp pro cd and followed the instructions to instal . it kept all of my files programs and most settings intact
oh… :o
i didn’t know you can update it this way… :
why not try to repair avast installation?..not sure though…but worth a try maybe…
If avast! is listed in Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs, you can certainly try the “Repair” option.
Otherwise, I would suggest to download the full installer from our web pages and reinstall avast!.
Billy, generally speaking, everything will work fine but - there is a ‘but’ - I recommend the 98 users run the ‘compatibility’ scanning of the Windows XP CD. Besides the hardware incompatibility (could be no drivers in the XP CD), a a lot of antivirus versions (not only avast) won’t work in an updated system. You must uninstall when you were at Windows 98 and, after installing XP, reinstall the application. Good luck.
i cant go back to 98 so i deleted avast from all programs list, add remove programs and desktop. went to avast home page and downloaded it again. when it finished downloading it came up with either change or uninstall. i clicked change and it said the product was updated successfully. on my desktop i have the setupeng file but now i cant find avast program anywhere :-[
Try to uninstall avast! using the AvClear4 utility first - and then run the installer again.
yes finally. all seems to be working exactly the way it was on 98. i feel much safer having the excellent avast going on my pc. thanx to all who replied especially igor
no worries billy…welcome to avast forums
