We have enjoyed the security of avast for a number of years. However, in recent months the daily updated installation process takes approximately 20-30 minutes in which time the computer is practically unusable because of the time lag. Is this normal, and if not, what can be done to speed the installation process? This has probably been answered in previous forum submissions but I thought I could get a direct answer the lazy way. Thanks for any help.
What avast version do you have ?
The latest version only just released is 4.8.1195, right click the avast ‘a’ icon, select Updating, Program Update.
Though bearing in mind the problem you are having with updates, it might be better to do a clean reinstall.
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
Now uninstall the current version using add remove programs, reboot, run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot, install the latest version, reboot.
The update process should take some seconds on DSL connections and some minutes on dial up.
For sure, not 20-30 minutes.
Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
