Apparently, Avast just did a rollback on their virus definitions from version 121003-2 to 121003-1. Now definitions and program report successful updates.
Yes I believe they have pulled the bad VPS 121003-2 to limited the spread of the problem until it is fully resolved.
I have 121003-2 on my other system, I got the problem resolved manually and was able to get 121003-2 before it was pulled. So mine reports a somewhat strange mismatch, but no problem it will resolve in due course.
