I have avast running for years, and automatic updates worked, until a few days ago. Now I get the message “Information about current update: Last encountered error: Can’t select any server for downloading (from 0).”
The log file says (wouldn’t it be nice to be able to ctrl+C and ctrl+V) tells me:
“Function setifaceupdatepackages() has failed. Return code is 0xC0000142, dwres 0xC0000142.”
(or 0x20000011, 0x2000000C)
Checking the log, I can see that just that evening I scanned and found and removed VBS:Banker-B and updates fail ever since.
Any suggestions (I can hear a “reinstall” coming, any other suggestions though?)
Or delete the 0KB servers.def and try a manual update, this should download a new copy or try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
I actually decided to download the latest version of avast again, since windows “add/remove programs” didn’t work for avast, so “repair” was not an available option. I dDid some more research and I found a “avast uninstaller” in the download section of the avast website, figured there was nothing else I could do.
Everything is working fine again, it just boggles the mind how, after years of loyal (and free!) service, detecting and deleting a virus can actually screw up the application!?
But I am not complaining, I like avast, and during all these years 24/7 online, I have not had any serious issues.
Thanks again, case closed, and it can go in the X-files cabinet I guess (or maybe some avast developers want to look into it, but like I said, using the free version, I daren’t even ask
avast is up and running as it has been for years, and I am happy
So, Ronald, we’re happy with you too 8)
Indeed, in last versions, avast has some trouble on uninstalling (access rights). For the lucky ones, now everything is corrected

I can’t see it either, the problem of removing vbs:banker-b unless it was in the avast4 folder/sub-folder (which is highly unlikely), shouldn’t have any effect like this, files can get corrupted for many reasons.
However, I glad your up and running again, welcome to the forums.
