Updates killed Windows 8

This latest round of updates borked my Win8 installation to the point it would not boot. None of the repair options worked and it would not even boot into safe mode. I had to do a refresh and lose all my installed programs. I couldn’t do a system restore either because there were no restore points. I suspect the problem was caused by Classic Shell because last week when I did the first round of updates after installing Win8, I had StartW8 installed and it didn’t work after the updates. I’m thinking the Classic Shell option to skip the start screen was the culprit but of course I have no concrete evidence of that.

G’day Dch48,

When I install Classic Shell I didn’t installed the normal way by double clicking onto ‘ClassicShellSetup.exe’ file IF you have to UAC turn on, what I had to do is right click onto the ‘ClassicShellSetup.exe’ file and pick ‘Run as administrator’, sometime the software doesn’t get installed properly into W8 because I had a similar problem you were having only when I’m installing this software for the first time on W8.

When you right click onto the exe file and pick ‘Run as administrator’ this will give you more control the UAC when you’re trying to install the normal way while you’re already have login into the administrator account, sometimes their is a confliction between ClassicShell and the UAC so if you do it this way they won’t be any problems just in case IF the software doesn’t get installed properly into W8.

I have no problem or any issue between ClassicShell and MS Windows Update getting all the latest security patches.

Well, I also had the UxThemePatcher installed which patches some of the Windows files so you can use custom themes. That may have been the problem as well.

Uninstall UxThemePatcher from W8 because according to their website saying ‘Now UXTheme Multi-Patcher officially use Rafael’s specialized memory-patching that works on almost every Windows since XP till latest Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (I’m not really sure if it’ll work on Windows 8 too)’, make sure all the leftover are completely clean out sometime a file can trigger to the UAC when some file are not recognised by MS.

Yes, the Win8 support is in beta. It did work but I have not installed it again since refreshing Windows.

Sorry Dch48 but it’s not ClassicShell.
Windows 8 is updated, the system has restarted and Classic Shell booted the system into the old familiar desktop.
I don’t have any other enhancement programs installed except Classic Shell.

Just FYI, have never had problems with ‘Classic Shell’ and/or Windows Updates here either on Win8 Pro 64Bit

I had pretty much already concluded it was the theme patcher that messed things up because some of the system files it modified got changed during the updates so my configuration wouldn’t load. Lesson learned I guess.

Dch48 are you okay now ??? ???

Yeah everything is fine now. I was having a problem with the dual boot loader taking 3 minutes to appear but I tracked that problem down and fixed it. You have to either turn off the Fast Startup feature or completely disable Hibernation in Win 8 when it’s in a dual boot setup.

I fully understand what you mean, I had mind setup as well and it can be a real bloody pain in the arse
