Well, not too old to post it…

Skype 5.0 is out (the final version)
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/home

but watch out: it installs the toolbars (in IE9 and Chrome; didn’t in FF4 but probably does in FF3) without prompting you during the setup of course. I could get rid of the one in Chrome but as you know IE doesn’t allow to uninstall add-ons from it’s interface, just to disable. But before that I of course tried to uninstall “Skype toolbars” from the program list and here on W7/64 it’s a no go, getting this error message (see screen shot). Has to use system restore and fortunately I had a recent one as Skype doesn’t create any…bastards ;D

posted that on their forums too, but as far as I know it’s better to not expect any feedback there:
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=735583.

Also, I downloaded then the full installer, i.e. the business version (as opposed to the web install), expecting to find some options there during the setup, and there were none either. And last but not least, I was required to sign in to skype on their web site before being able to download the web installer. No such pain with the full installer though ;D …

edit: good news, the full installer doesn’t install the toolbars at all.

Setup options…
version 5.0.64.152

@ Omid >>> ??? I didn’t get that at all ??? could be that I missed the custom install button with the web installer but there was none at 100% with the full installer (but the full installer doesn’t install any extra feature anyway). Remains the uninstall issue if you get the toolbars. Could also be that my (edit:first) web install download was corrupted somehow.

edit: okay shame on me :-X I gave a new shot to the web install and the option button is there :-[ >>> so ignore my first post concerning that. But again, the toolbar uninstall bug is there.

@ Omid: how do you get a 64 bit version ? the MSI gives a 5.0.32.152 and the web installer a 5.0.0.152 which is a 32 bit version as well… as far as I know there’s no 64 bit version of Skype for Windows (but for Linux yes, and not the 5.0), so why did you type that ??? ::slight_smile:

I don’t know ???
I just downloaded this link: http://download.skype.com/partner/64/SkypeSetup.exe
and in the properties windows I see: [Screenshot]

[I’m running Windows 7 x86]

Omid: You are using Avira on one of your systems? :o

It’s years I do ;D

@ Omid: okay be careful, no web site is allowed to redistribute skype (well it was like that for a long time, and I doubt this has changed). If it really was a 64 bit version anyway it wouldn’t run on your 32 bit Windows + the thing is there’s no 5.0.64.152, it’s been edited. There’s only a 5.0.0.152 (from the web installer, and it does install a 32 bit version on 64 bit OS) and 5.0.32.152 (from the MSI). I would advise that you uninstall that, just in case… redownload it from the official Skype web site and reinstall it. The only difference with the last few versions of Skype and how it use to be is that they’re 64 bit compatible, but they’re still 32 bit (easy to check in task manager on 64 bit Windows as 32 bit processes hold the “*32” mention).

@Logos: Well, still www.skype.com give me same link? ??? I got that file from Skype official website (Web Installer - 835KB)

MD5 : a04e468166f8a6d5b20a2aeb4230064e
SHA1 : a2fb105e16adeb599c893ab17ec42fb48ce37b3f
SHA256: 18d20bcdf21d1c0b9a82a1cd26d237be6a641a66c01b7a95ac63cf2a7

okay they don’t match of course:

your file from the third party web site: (showing 5.0.64.152)>>> 835 kb
MD5: a04e468166f8a6d5b20a2aeb4230064e
SHA512: b6ff51bb68ca0095f49faad6bcd4ca1f06f297e49fa7f2161a025fc7662455a8dd37540fe20dfd1e28

the file from the official Skype web site: (showing 5.0.0.152) >>> 933 kb
MD5: 98ce6c89b81ed64f87ba0b1907d86791
SHA512: b53b00c75220946a176267864fc8567768fcc37654c7a461ac15e1ce7d10fb1dfb0d6e700b1871d3e4

another official ;D >>> 934 kb
MD5: f17bb5e20dd431bd92f7c74a0adfda29
SHA512: 084238083141dc7d33603c001b4a349c393a0e75f19d9f46a835a3627f2b094062144faa39b335a2f1

as to the size, there’s a problem, because I’ve downloaded the web installer twice and got different sizes, 933 and 934 kb. So you can’t trust an MD5 or SHA sig anyway.

Nice off-topic ::slight_smile:

I downloaded again and still same result… (indeed I clicked on “Get Skype” on skype.com)

Shouldn’t Skype be banned in your country?

Here it is already blocked

Edit:

I guess Logos might be right

I did a Google search for Skype 5.0.64.152

I didn’t even find a single link

The page was empty

Edit:

Now I see this thread as No1 in Google search result lol

@ Omid: you don’t need to answer if you mind… okay, was just worried about the version numbering, 5.0.64.152, and you can’t get that from the Skype web site, such a version doesn’t exist.

@Chris: It is not forbidden to download it, but it does not connect easily, but not a problem with my network, Facebook and youtube is banned, but don’t I use?

@Logos: I guess we are downloading different file because Skype has dedicated servers and have not uploaded same file over all of them. sometimes similar problem happen with Hitman Pro too, US IPs download newer version but from same URL German IP download older version.

Re Sun Java updates: Now that Oracle has taken over, most addresses for the Sun downloads have been changed. Finding the manual/offline version I normally use took some hunting through their FAQs … for the RTE (all platforms), it’s now at http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp .

(Edit) Oracle did make one nice change – you no longer have to also get that idiotic download manager first, at least in the offline version.

Bahh I just let it do the auto updating like I always have.
