FileZilla 3.4.0 Beta 1

Isn’t today Black Tuesday?

Why are the latest updates not showing online?

@ avastfan1: There’s effectively only one update this time. A security fix for XP. The other is MSRT.

They were for me on both systems, XP Pro and win7.

They are showing as available now. Must have been a server delay. Thanks for the response.

End of thread hijack.

Alternative Flash Player Auto-Updater
Current Version: 1.0.0.4
Adobe’s Flash Player is the key to the internet’s most used technology called Flash. Nowadays Flash can be considered one of the internet’s basics. Therefore it has always been targeted by hackers, malware authors and so on. Adobe tries to keep up with those by offering security updates - but although Flash offers update checks itself, many systems run outdated and insecure Flash Player versions. That is a huge security risk which must be eliminated. Alternative Flash Player Auto-Updater let’s you download and install the Flash Player without having to download Adobe’s download manager - it downloads the latest version and asks you whether it should be installed or not. You can choose to let it run at the start of Windows, this way you can be sure that your system will never run an outdated and extremely dangerous version of Flash Player.

Avast 5.1.889

I recommend caution before installing this one:

  1. The EULA contains
B. OpenCandy End User License Agreement

Jan 26 2010

This installer uses the OpenCandy network to recommend other software you may find valuable during the installation of this software. OpenCandy collects NON-personally identifiable information about this installation and the recommendation process. Collection of this information ONLY occurs during this installation and the recommendation process; in accordance with OpenCandy’s Privacy Policy, available at www.opencandy.com/privacy-policy

The installer accessed the Internet during the installation, presumably to phone home any information it gleaned during its inspection of my system.

  1. The installer tried to access or modify several protected registry keys on my system, including ones in
    ComodoGroup
    Adobe\Acrobat Reader
Microsoft Conferencing, Messenger, MRT, Office, SystemCertificates, Windows, Windows NT, WindowsMediaPlayer
    Internet Settings\ProxyEnable

I can see why it would have to access everything listed except for Comodo unless it needed to be allowed in order to function properly. It’s going to change the way Flash is downloaded and installed so it has to make some alterations to things. It also probably needs to collect the info about the systems it is installed on to help analyze potential problems which may occur at a later date. Many programs do this. I wouldn’t be overly concerned myself.

SUPERAntiSpyware 4.48.1000
http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

I don’t see why it should have to access any of those keys in order to tell if Flash is up to date and install a new version if necessary. It looks to me like the EULA explains what it’s doing and why. I think the other forum members should at least be aware of this. There’s no mention of phoning home the user’s computer configuration in the announcement posted here or the program’s home page. At least it’s in the EULA.

Edit: I just read the whole linked EULA at http://www.opencandy.com/privacy-policy. It includes:

With respect to consumers receiving recommendations through the OpenCandy Network, we collect information through our software plug-in that is needed to provide relevant recommendations as well as information that helps us understand whether or not our service made a good recommendation. This information is not personally identifiable and may include information regarding your geo-location, operating system, language setting and aggregate statistics that tell us whether or not you already have a product installed that we might recommend to you, as well as information regarding whether a recommendation has been accepted, downloaded, and installed. We utilize this information to help us improve our ability to provide consumers the best product recommendations available. It is also OpenCandys policy to generally require our publisher partners to provide their customers (who receive OpenCandy Network recommendations) notice of OpenCandys privacy practices in this regard.

Before anyone runs this installer, I recommend reading the whole OpenCandy EULA. I had no idea that just installing Alternative Flash Player Auto-Updater was signing me up for all this. No thanks!
