Yep… been updating like 65 computers today with the new java update… much fun.

Updated Java from the Control Panel gui and the Behavior Shield warned about it being untrusted. That shouldn’t happen.

Which element did it object to

Since I’m sticking with the default BeS allow in 5.1.889, it allowed it and created an entry in the behaviorshield.txt file.

15/02/2011 20:53:12 Modification of: \REGISTRY\MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\JavaQuickStarterService\DeleteFlag By: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\regutils.dll Via: C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe -> Action allowed 15/02/2011 20:53:38 Modification of: \REGISTRY\MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\JavaQuickStarterService\Type By: C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\regutils.dll Via: C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe -> Action allowed

The regutils.dll file in the above report entry is an unsigned file that is modifying the registry so it might be reasonable for it to question that if you have it on Ask.

Uninstalled the prior version and clean installed the new one without any problem.

No gripes from the behavior shield here either – I over-installed U24 using the offline installer version, which is probably safe enough these days considering they now re-use the same folder instead of creating a new one for each update.

I’m glad Paragon, when they took it over from Sun, got rid of the requirement for using their own downloader, it was a nuisance having to remove that after doing each update.

Yes it is the regutils file but I don’t think it’s too reasonable. Java should be whitelisted so it doesn’t happen

What is wrong with the reverse being applied JAVA signing its processes.

The only files that are whitelisted are presumably those in the persistent cache from trusted sources are guaranteed clean and digitally signed.

@MikeBCda: How do you find PCTFW 7?

66% speed improvement in JavaScript rendering and then password sync… YAY!

I assume you’re asking whether it works well for me, rather than where you can download it from. If you do mean the latter, you can find it here.

I’ve never had problems with it … I did replace it with the Outpost firewall after Symantec “retired” (temporarily) the PC Tools one, but went back after Symantic bowed to what was undoubtedly massive backlash from the market and “resurrected” it. It does have one nice feature which is missing from Outpost and some other competitors: in application rules, it can be set to flag rules for apps which are no longer on the computer, so those rules can be removed.

Thanks for the feedbakc MikeBCda. I did indeed mean what you think of the software.

Are you using the free or paid version?

Free version, as is true of all my utilities with one exception, JV-16 Power Tools. That’s the only one (shareware) which I liked enough to pay for registration after the trial period expired.

A number of things were pre-installed on my system when I bought it, most of which would probably have cost me if I’d bought them separately later. I did keep Farstone’s RestoreIT, which while now obsolete has proven quite useful for me a number of times (it’s roughly the equivalent of a disk-image utility).

Is this still ‘update’ topic?

More or less. Less lately.
