OOOOPS my bad. Tried my xbox and the shared connections were hosed!
Looked for any info on what had happened, but found nothing. Finally
held my breath, did a system restore , and VOILA … back to normal.
Now… WHY did this happen? The update notification is back, and I will
definitely ignore them.

I don’t believe it is too OT.
I know I ended up hiding one such troublesome .net update years ago (this may go the same way). To say that I hate .net with a vengeance is possibly an understatement. If only MS would get their collective s h 1 t together so that versions aren’t independent, so you could just install the latest version and be done with all of these updates for earlier versions.

Yes, I’ve had my fair share of .net problems, too. I have automatic updates turned off, but just went to WU which shows no high-priority updates. Apparently, KB2736416 has stuck for me. The Netgear installation manual lists a CD drive, 15Mbytes available storage, and XP SP2 as system requirements. No mention of .net, unless .net is a prerequisite for SP2.(?)
PS If you end up removing .net, there is a .NET Framework Cleanup Tool that might help.

My commercial network uses a wireless G modem/router, while my personal network uses a wireless N router. The affected system is on the personal network.
I see you now have uncovered an issue. Glad you got it fixed so easily.
I made a point of successfully avoiding .net, probably cutting my updates by half or more both in number and volume, while on XP, but it seems to be necessary for a lot of functions under 7.

The .net framework certainly isn’t a prerequisite for XP, it is just that some applications use .net framework it is only then that essentially you require it. The big problem is that programs require certain versions, so you end up with a nightmare if you have applications that use early versions. Then you have multiple versions of .net that you have to keep up to date.
One of the real problems is there is no easy way to determine what programs you have that actually require it and then what version they require. This is what makes removal a pain in the rear too what versions do you reinstall, which is why I avoid that route, waiting for a program to fail because of no .net version (hopefully it would play nice and say what version is required).
