Updates

I can never seem to get “automatic updates” or “Ask when updates are available.” I have had Avast on two different hard drives and still have this problem. Is this function only available in the paid for version does anyone know? ???

Hi no i used to use the free edition and i always got my updates check your firewall to make sure you have set it to let avast update through.

avast.setup requires internet access, what is your firewall?
Check your firewall and ensure you haven’t denied permission to avast.setup, at some point (first attempt to update) your firewall should have asked permission for avast.setup, you may have said no because you didn’t know what was required.
Have you tried a manual update, right click avast icon, select Updating, iVAS?

avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds.
If there isn’t, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band.
If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.

Hi all.
I have no problems doing manual updates at all. I am on an Internet sharing box (Router) which acts as a hardware firewall. No other programs that require automatic updates have any problems updating. Saying that I prefer to update manually anyway, but was just putting Avast through it’s paces ;D and seeing that is does what it has supposed to do.

I had the same problem and the solution for me was the tell avast! I’m always connected to the Internet.

I have a question about this: Usually my internet won’t work for a little bit after starting my computer, and often avast! fails to update (red box). So, would telling avast! that I have a dialup connection fix this? And would doing that affect anything besides updating?
Thanks

Sure, just change (or add) [b]AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds[b] value into the [InetWD] section of avast4.ini file.
You could set the number of seconds to wait before attempting to update. The default is 30 but it may not be enough in some DSL systems. In this case, you can try increasing this e.g. to 60 (1 minute). That should be enough.

I will give that a try and let you know if it works.

No sooner had I posted my reply and altered the settings to “on all the time”, than it worked ;D

It should work as avast! waits a little more by default to update when ‘always connected’ option is set.
The other option (a larger delay) is a troubleshooting if a specific system is not working with the default and the user gets errors
