Updating Avast under Vista failed

Hi,

Just freshly installed Vista Home Premium and downloaded and installed the latest version of Avast Home (4.7.942). The problem is Avast can’t update the virus definition.

Belows are the last few lines in the setup log file (if that helps)

Internet connection is through a proxy and I have set the proxy details in “update (connections)” setting.

Well, TWO big issues I got now:

  1. As mentioned, Avast can’t update anything. The virus definition is 15/1/07.

  2. Avast does not seem to work very well with Vista. When I right click on the “a” blue ball in the task bar, go to “update (connections)” and click “Proxy”, Avast does not display the proxy setting dialog. Rather, Vista seems to block the display with the “Interactive Service” window and after the Proxy setting dialog only displays after I chose “Show Message” from the “Interactive Service” window. Horrible! (well, luckily, the connection still works with “Test Connection”)

Please help.

Forgot to mention, I tried to do a manual update by running Avast as an administrator (use “run as administrator” from the menu). I clicked the iAVG button on the Avast main window but it has no effect. It just does nothing after I clicked that button.

Just kill the avast.setup process and retry the update.

I can’t delete the file. Windows said it is in use. How?

No, don’t delete the file - just kill the corresponding process in Task Manager.

But there is no such process. The only one I found related to Avast is ashDisp.exe.

Basically clicking “iAVG update” button has no effect. I tried to uninstall (using the cleaner tool) and re-install but still doesn’t work.

You need to press the Show Processes for All Users button at the lower part of the window…

Suddenly, after several reboots, Avast reports that the virus database is updated. I have no idea why.

By the way, I can do a manual update:

  1. install Avast (run as admin)
  2. from the start menu, righ click on Avast and run as admin

Doing these, I can change the proxy setting without getting the “interactive service” dialog and can also manually update the virus database by clicking the “iAVG” button. Everything seems to be working great!
