Updating CWShredder, Hijakthis, & Spyware Blaster

Is there one website where I can update CWShredder, Spyware Blaster, and Hijakthis? Over a year ago when my friend’s computer got infected with trojan viruses, a tech person advised me to download a handful of free programs like the above ones to help clean the computer of viruses. When I clicked on the icons, a small window that said “unexpected error” popped up. I haven’t been able to update these programs. Thanks for your help, Megaman

Not that I’m aware of as they are all from different software companies and you have to connect to the parent company to update SpywareBlaster. The others only require downloading the latest version and install. HiJackThis doesn’t have a high update frequency .

Your best option is to monitor (Notify) the >> Update << thread where users let us know when updates for many security related updates.

All three are linked off the Diagnose XP Guide

The versions are not mentioned but the links are direct links to the most updated files off of each programs home page. HijackThis is in the advanced section.

Mastertech, I did go to the link you provided. I downloaded HijackThis, but I couldn’t “use” it. It was in a “zip” form. I tried to open it up and use HijackThis, but it didn’t work, so I ended up deleting what I had downloaded. Maybe I downloaded it the wrong way or something or didn’t know how to open it up in WinZip. How do I successfully open HijackThis and be able to use it? Thanks for your help, Megaman

You can download, install and use a free archiver that handles zip files.
www.7-zip.org

Tech, thanks for the info about 7-zip. I’m at the link you gave, but I don’t know which one to download. There are three 7-zip downloads. My friend’s computer is running on ME if that helps. It’s an old computer - almost 5 yrs old. Once I download the correct one, I’ll probably need help how to use it and open HijackThis. I downloaded HijackThis again, but it’s still in a “zip” file of some sort. Which 7-zip do I download? Thanks, Megaman

Megaman,

I actually prefet IZARC as WinZip replacement. 7-Zip will work but I like the functionality of IZArc not to mention it supports the .ace format something 7-Zip does not.

This will work: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z423.exe?download
Go there and choose one of the mirrors (locations to download from).

Hi Tech, I just got through downloading the 7z423.exe file from the link you provided. What do I do now to try to open HijakThis, etc? Thanks, Megman

  1. Download the 7-zip
  2. Install it (run, double-click the file…) and allow to add Explorer Extensions.
  3. Go with Windows Explorer untill the HijackThis.zip file
  4. Right click it and choose the menu 7-zip
  5. Extract files…
  6. Choose the destination folder or create one (new)
  7. There will be the extracted HijackThis setup
  8. Then you have to install HijackThis (similar to step 2 above)

Thanks for the procedures, but I need more help. I dbl-clicked it and installed it. But I don’t understand “Go with Windows Explorer untill the HijackThis.zip file.” What’s untill? Until? When I rt-clicked these are the options:

Add to Zip, Add to 7z423.zip, Zip and E-mail 7z423.zip, avast scan 7z423.exe, Open archive, Extract files, Extract here, Test Archive, and Add to Archive.

“3. Go with Windows Explorer untill the HijackThis.zip file and 4. Right click it and choose the menu 7-zip” preceeds extract files, but I’m not clear on 3 & 4. Which 7-zip do I choose from the options I gave above? Thanks, Megaman

Sorry. Until is for time not place.
Browse. You did it right, you went there and right click the file. You did it good, do not be affraid.

Ok, choose Extract files.

I still don’t understand your steps, so I posted another thread to get others to help me. I need simple, step-by-step procedures. Thanks, Megman

Sorry, but no need for that… other users will come here and try to explain you better than I.
No need to open another thread about the same issue.

Yes, it is becoming tiresome I have answered him in one of the two other threads he opened about this. I have mentioned this jumping to another thread in the hope of getting different answers twice now.

Tech people, you don’t have to reply to my inquiries about HijackThis and 7-zip because in another post, someone advised me not to use HijackThis because it can damage a computer system if a person doesn’t know what he or she is doing. I already uninstalled HijackThis and 7-zip. Thanks, Megaman
