Can someone Please HELP with an updating error- error reads that my HTTP Proxy Setting May not be correct to allow for program updates.
It appears when I try to get an update- that this error keeps coming up.
I’ve gone as far as turning off my Firewall to see if that is the problem. I do have avast.com listed as exception. (Nothing about how to list avast.com/update though.)
I ran a virus scan this morning and nothing came of it…thankfully - But I still can’t seem to get updates.
Anyone with knowledge with HTTP Proxy Settings that could offer in site on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to all to assist…and to those who wish they could but just can’t…
Can you please give an exact copy of the error message text?
If you can, a screen shot of the error would do.
What is your OS?
Here is one of the errors. OS Windows XP
Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Cannot connect to download16.avast.com (unknown:80).
Total time: 42 s
I will try to locate the other error and post.
Thanks
Cannot connect to download9.avast.com
(unknown:80)
- you are not connected to the Internet.
- your firewall does not allow the program “avast*.setup” to access the Internet; you can find details in help or read the FAQ section on avast! website.
- your HTTP proxy settings are incorrect.
- the server is inaccessible because of a network error or maintenance.
*I’m connected to the internet. (cable connection)
*Firewall is permitted (or I’ve turned it off)
*Network Error- If avast is having a problem connecting…my server here is not having issues…
*That narrows it down to HTTP proxy setting… (??)
Ensure that your firewall allows avast.setup access to the internet
Ensure that your proxy settings are correct.
Is this not the same problem you experienced before - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=13784.0 Please keep this with the other thread al it is doing is duplication effort and can be very confusion.
Not the same problem…Different error codes and messages now!!!
I do not know what the appropriate HTTP proxy setting should be. It allows me to change it, but if this is the problem, what should it be changed to.
My Firewall allows avast.com nothing indicated as avast.setup - nor can a search of avast.setup be located.
What do you suggest at this point? Where is it I’m going wrong?
It is still related, an Update problem and people will no doubt offer suggestions already mentioned in the other thread, as I know I have.
Ur…Avast has around 22 servers for update (I knew this since I taught all of them to my firewall). So, whether is is download9 or download14, it is basically the same problem you are encountering.
However, if you can come here with the PC in question, it means your browser can access to remote port 80, which is the exact same port needed to be allowed for Avast update.
If Avast on yout PC is not allowed to access to its update servers, it may not be good news since it may mean that someone or something seems to be preventing it from being updated. Can you download this file and update Avast manually?
Well, I didn’t answer to any of your questions.
In deed, HTTP proxy setting can be a reason (although I thought you should be able to remember at least the fact you had configured it when I was writing my previous post). Look into this timely thread for proxy configuration and the location of avast.setup file (By default, it should be c:\program files\alwil software\avast4\setup\avast.setup).
Also, as a tip, during the time of connection errors, Avast may have created avast.setup files such as avast.setup, avast.setup1, avast.setup2. I recommend you to delete all of them in the folder since they are the remains of what is supposed to be temporally files. As long as your firewall is configured to allow avast.setup, it should be O.K.
Never heard about numbered files… Maybe the better will be uninstalling and reinstalling avast… :
Oops. I made a mistake about the place of the numbers and the number of figures.
From the update section of the FAQ (The red fonts are mine)
2) The components of avast! 4 that should be allowed to connect:
avast.setup
avastXX.setup (where “XX” are some numbers)
aswUpdSv.exe
ashWebSv.exe
Thank you for the tip, Tech but my Avast is working fine. I may need to re-install my brain, though.
Back to on-topic, cajun-girl (if you are still around at all), what I wanted to say is that the process name you need your firewall to allow is not always avast.setup but can be avastXX.setup when you have the remains of cancelled updates. To avoid confusion, I recommend you to delete all the possible leftovers (avast.setup and avastXX.setup files…search setup folder for *.setup.), though.
Also, the FAQ I linked above has a nice read, containing useful info, for firewall configuration, too. However, I doubt it is the problem of your firewall since you wrote that you had even turned off your firewall.
