Hi - Just installed the new free Avast 4.8 on my new pc, Windows XP home op system. For some reason it will not update manually. I’ve never had this problem before with any of the other pc’s in my house or biz. Any ideas to correct this? Thank you! Deca
Hi Deca, welcome to the forum
This type of issue is usually a firewall configuration problem, or a previous installed AV (or other security application.)
Can you advise your firewall, and the previous AV installed, and how it was uninstalled?
Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.
Hello all - I tried turning the firewall off & still it would not update. Below is the log that Tech requested. Thank you all! Deca

This part of the log seems ok.
Which is your firewall?
Hello again Tech. Just the one included with Windows XP. Thanks again! Deca
Any previous AV?
Was it a temporary problem?
Does it occur after booting?
Did you register your avast copy with the license key?
Hello again. I installed Avast on a brand new pc. I only had to uninstall that crap Norton free trial program first. Of course I put in the reg #. I have used Avast w/o any problems on at least 6 other pc’s which makes this so peculiar.
After I installed Avast - it has never updated properly, booting has had no effect. I uninstalled/reinstalled & still no go. Every other program I have updated OK. I’m thinking just to switch to AVG or Avira. Thanks again! Deca
How did you uninstall Norton? Did you just use Add/Remove programs (which will not fully uninstall Norton) or did you use the Norton uninstall utility program (available from their website) which really does uninstall it?
The log posted appears to show a manual update when the avast antivirus signature file is already fully up to date and there is nothing to be done.
If you are not using a proxy connection to the Internet then please try the following and see if it helps…
avast Program Settings > Update (Connections) > Proxy > Select "Direct connection (no proxy) > Test connection > If “OK” then > OK
Norton removal tool here http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&ssfromlink=true&sprt_cid=1a13409b-29db-4397-a286-9dec49f8e252&seg=hho&ct=us&lg=en&docurl=20080828154508EN at step 3.
Definitely should be run. Might be necessary to uninstall/reinstall Avast afterward. If so, a full uninstall, running of the Avast uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html and reinstall is indicated.
When uninstalling, don’t forget to disable the self-protection module (under settings>troubleshooting) first, then stop on access protection before uninstalling the program.
Ok When you uninstall norton it tends to Turn off windows firewall causeing some problems. Check your windows fire wall let Avaswt thru.
I somehow doubt that as it is entirely unrelated to the uninstall or use of the removal tool.
If you were uninstalling the norton suite then if anything it should enable the windows firewall having removed the norton firewall.
So I don’t know where you got this from, I certainly haven’t seen this reported in the forums (in the five years I’ve been on them) and we frequently recommend using the NAV removal tool.
