Recently while using my laptop (running Vista) when I booted it, I received a message saying my Avast! was about to expire. I clicked on the link to update it, followed the path to get the free version. When I tried to download it, I received a message saying something like “Could not use C:\Temp… Save to an alternate location or change the settings.” However, it would not allow me to save to any alternate location and I tried changing some of the settings in the only Temp folder in C:, but to no avail. Yesterday, when I went to use the lap top, I got the message saying the Avast! had expired and I was unprotected.
What do I have to do to get the program updated?
Which version of Avast! are you using?

Now I’m really confused. I booted up the lap top to see what version of Avast was running. It says it is version 5.0.677. But now it says it doesn’t expire until 2/10/2011. Not sure how that happened, but guess I’m good for now.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Sometimes glitches happen and a simple reboot is all that is needed to fix it. Glad to hear that things are working for you now.
Should you have a problem again, try the reboot first. If that fails, try an Avast Repair:
- Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
- Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
- Reboot.
