Updating problems with client computer on ICS network

To make a long story short, my wife’s hard disk drive crashed and I had to reinstall everything. That job is now done including installing the latest non beta avast version 4. with virus definition now all updated.

But now it looks like I have a repeat of an updating problem we had before.

And to explain the problem requires a minimal explanation of an ICS network. To over simplify, an ICS network is simply two computers connected together using a crossover cable connected to the ethernet ports of each computer. One computer, the host computer, has an internet connection, and the client computer, gets to share that internet access with the host computer.

At one time my computer was the client computer and now, I have made my wife’s computer the client computer while I have assumed the role of host while I troubleshoot a unrelated different problem.

But at one time in the past, when both my wife’s computer and my computer both ran avast as an AV, and my wife’s computer was host computer, automatic avast updates worked on the host computer but did not work on the client computer. But manual updates worked fine on the client computer. I finally solved that problem by using Avira instead on my client compter. But in a take my wife, someone anyone take my wife type problem, my wife receives all kinds of email attachments from friends which she opens all too readily. Making Avast the better AV for her because it has the email pre scanning Avira lacks.

So after a maybe too long winded explanation, is there a way to get automatic Avast updates on the client computer of an ICS network?

Why not buy a router like a D-Link DI-604UP or Linksys BEFSX41?
They provide the added benefit of a built in firewall.

And now I regret not being more proactive in posting, No NO No no and no, an ICS network works fine for me, has stood the test of time,
and it would cost me at least a $100.00 or more to convert to a router system.

The fault here is with Avast, and your solution is a cop out. If Avira can do it, why can not Avast?
