so i’ve 30 days left on my free registration and i tried updating it, won’t let me…
i received a license #, but it won’t allow me to insert it, do i have to wait until the 30 days (out of 365) is up to re-register?
why is updating avast so complicated?

The Registration Section changes at 28 days I believe, until that changes you can’t re-register. Nor is there any way to manually enter the new key which is also valid from the time you get it, not when the current registration ends.
When you update from the UI the registration is normally for 365 days from that date, so re-registering very early is a bit counter productive. By allowing re-registration a bit early (approx 28 days), if you happen to be going away you can do so.
The recommendation is about more than simply updating.
