How often should you update VRDB?
The default setting for Avast is every 21 days which it will do automatically unless you change this setting as I understand it.
How often would in part depend upon how much work you do on your computer as far as modifying and adding files and your own personal comfort level. I leave it on the default (21 day) setting but this can be changed.
Where would I find the setting for how often VRDB updates so I can check?
Thanks.
Bill
Avast default is 21 days as I posted before. This will not change unless you want to change the setting in the .ini file which on a normal install is located in the following location: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA[b]avast4.ini[/b]
In the avast4.ini file you will find the [VRDB] section of the avast4.ini file.
There will be no entry for RunInterval in the [VRDB] section of the avast4.ini file
This would mean that Avast will use the default of 21 days.
If you want to change that setting to run at a different interval then you would need to add an Interval setting value in the avast4.ini file within the [VRDB] section.
The value of RunInterval is to be set in minutes.
For example if you wanted the VRDB to run every WEEK you would enter the following:
[VRDB]
RunInterval=10080
10080 = 7 days because there are 1440 min in a day (60*24) and 7 days X 1440 min = 10080 min
Running it more frequently than the default 21 days would lessen the span of the three generations of the VRDB info it has, to effectively 14 days. This could mean that if you got a previously undetected infection as and when avast was able to detect it all three generations could relate to an infected file.
Given that avast 5 won’t have the VRDB as the technology behind it is depreciating with the new malware infections. So personally I wouldn’t change the default generation interval and some would say you could even disable it completely, given what has been said about it not being in version 5.0.
Hi :
I “disabled” my VRDB over a yr ago based on Info from One of the Developers
