Is there a setting that would allow Avast to update when a restricted user, no administrator authority, is active? The way it is now, it will only update when an Administrator userid is active.

You don’t say what your operating system is ?
The avast VPS virus signatures should be able to be updated by a limited user, though if you are using Vista I don’t know if UAC would get in the way.
Why do you think so? avast! can update even when nobody is logged on…
