seems to be a problem for me. I keep getting the message “unable to connect to server” when I try updating :(. Any one got any ideas why please? I am new to avast, and have to say I like the product for the most part.
What other security software have you installed?
Check these:
- Have you allowed AvastSvc.exe and avast.setup in your firewall?
- Can you browse the internet on that pc?
- Set the connection as “direction connection(no proxy)” in settings(Right hand top corner in avast GUI) > updates > proxy settings > select direction connection(no proxy)
Hi. Double checked settings. and adjusted as suggested. Yes I am talking to you from the pc concerned. Still getting the same message.
Please answer nmb’s question.
The user already answered them (except specifying other security tools currently installed or that were installed in the past), but it seems that it wasn’t effective in updating Avast.
@maltacanary, I’m not sure if you want to update the database or the program. In any case, you may want to clean your browsing cache, reset your modem (if apply), then reboot and try again. If that doesn’t work, maybe you could try (in the meantime until the server connection returns to normal) to download manually (“manually” as oppose to using Avast GUI to download the updates).
- Really…? Where…??
- That’s exactly what we need to know.

So, as I said, we still need to know about the security tools currently installed or that were installed in the past. The rest has been answered.
@maltacanary, try to follow my previous suggestions (clean browser cache, reset modem, reboot, try again), and come back with positive/negative feedback (including the answer for that question about security tools).
Well, I thought it was clear enough…
But now the OP definitely knows what to answer. ;D
So - - - you wanna know what else is installed for security? Ashampoo firewall.
I used to use AVG free - - but had a problem with it.
I used to use zone alarm too.
When the probs began with the AVG I uninstalled both it and zone alarm and am trying these I have now installed.
I can do without the sarky comments from you Asyn. I came here looking for help, not sarcasm, thanks.
- Ashampoo is not compatible with avast. Drop it.

8)Problem solved. Changed the firewall back to zone alarm. All bases now covered, and avast updated. Cheers to all those that replied. One happy bunny here. ;D
