Upgrade From 4.8 To 7 .... Possible

My sister has avast 4.8 (free) and I was about to help her upgrade to 7. Will there be problems?

I have ver 7 (free) but got to it incrementally (4… → 5… → 6… → 7) so not sure if a total jump will work.

Hi

It’s easy than you think.

You must download the full new version, and the utility to clean previous avast installation.

Reboot in Xp or other windows safe mode, perform a clean soft with avast utility.

Reboot again in normal mode, do a ccleaner time if you have it, and install New full version.

Take care, if you don’t want Chrome navigator, don’t forget to uncheck twice the two option on the beginning installation and to the end of installation when other avast windows show it to install Chrome.

That why will i do like this.

Maybe you can install full new 7.0.1456 version without clean before, but wait answer of avast team or pro to say what’s better.

I give to you how will i do, it’s working fine like this on two laptop and Eeepc ;D

Thank you.

I Use CCleaner all the time and will use utility

I wouldn’t hold it against the avast team if they didn’t fully test a upgrade from version 4.8 to version 7 b/c that is several years back worth of software. I would completely uninstall version 4.8 through the regular methods meaning the add/remove control panel, no safe mode required. It will probably tell you to restart your computer to complete the uninstall, do it then finally install the version 7.

You only need to use safe more or the avast cleaning utility if you are unable to uninstall 4.8 using normal methods. If you need it to use the Avast uninstall utility then take note of the directions, warning and be extra careful

To clarify the correct way to update from v.4 to the current version from the previous posts:

  1. Save a copy of Avast and save it to your HDD:
    Version 7.0.1456:
    Avast Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
    Avast Pro AV : http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
    Avast Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD.
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Go into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool. Uninstall ALL previous versions and products of Avast you had on this machine and reboot in between each uninstall.
  5. Reboot.
  6. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
  7. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS online.

Avast v.7 installs in a different location on your machine than previous versions, therefore you need to follow these directions. I suggest cleaning your machine after you get Avast going with something like CCleaner Slim version (no toolbars) http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds.

Please let us know if you have any questions and how this works for you. Thank you.

The reason safe mode is best as the uninstall utility works better. Safe mode also prevents avast self defense mode from kicking in.
If you follow the steps in the link you provided you will find step #2 directs the user to use safe mode. This way any and all previous versions can be safely and completely uninstalled. Please read SafeSurf’s post.
