when you have the free avast and you want to try the paid version, can you do that without hurting the free version? i want to try the trial ones but my free is already license for a year. when the trial version is over can i go back to the free if i have to?

As for upgrading to a higher version of Avast!, open the GUI (Avast! Program Interface) to the Summary Tab. If you are online, a mini web page will open within, and you can select ‘Get Upgrade’ for Avast! Internet Security.
You can download either Avast! Pro or AIS.
This will replace the free with a trial version good for one month, after which it will either revert to free or you pay for the license. It will be necessary to re-register the free to continue protection after 30 days, in which case, a different license will apply, and be good for a year after that. You cannot keep the original license for the free version you now have, it will be replaced either way.
So, short answer is, you can go back to free if you wish. Just re-register for an additional year of protection.
